It worked fine for me.
Came home, and ran the plug wires. They WERE underneath, so I bought a stock Vette Taylor set.
Numbered them up on the bench, a dab of silicone grease in each plug boot, and laced them up underneath.

I ran the front bank over, and the rear under, and I did not like that either.

So, I re ran them underneath, switched a couple , and shortened two.
# 6 sucked, so when I shortened it up, I sleeved it.
Break time.
I come out an hour later, did a fast check, and started it up. Pop out the carb. I am off a few, but not enough. Get it started, same ****. WTF?
I forgot to plug on #6.

Okay, should be fine. Started up, but it runs iffy, like its lean.
Now, I ran it fine before, because I only change one thing at a time. It ran fine as set, so now what?
I decide to call it a day, and when I shut it off, the headlights open up.
Now I know. The backfire blew the headlight hoses off under the dash.
I capped off all the vacuum, reset the choke to try another postion, plugged in the vacuum advance, pump the gas once, and varoom.
Instant start and smooth idle.
Tweek timing 2 degrees, and she is happy.
36* at 2800 rpm, 18* at idle. Add vc, and I get 28* at idle after start, and 46* at cruise.
The batt post at top makes a light easy.
If it was mine, I would also jump the purple wire on a button here to bump the starter over.

My ammeter was the same way when I first got my '73. Can't remember what I did to fix it but something in the movement was wrong. Maybe it was just gunked up. Can't remember. I do remember also finding the coil had a break in it. I soldered that back together, fixed whatever was wrong with the movement and it worked fine after that. I later upgraded to Autometer gauges. I've decided I like a voltmeter much better.
DC
I have RobinAir gauges and a HF vacuum pump for A/C work, but I did modify it for this use.
It comes with a freon type schrader port, and to change it, you have to remove the handle and switch cover.
A brass 90* 3/8" npt solved that.
With a variety of 3/8" x barb fittings, your good to go.
$5, and fixed. The hose was also a few milimeters too large, so I installed a worm drive clamp.
Now it holds vacuum.
On to headlights.
Much easier like this with the engine off.
Almost always the bypass valve hisses.
Tough to find with engine noise.
