Not neccessarily in that order (j/k).
This stuff peevs the cr*p out of me (this stuff can be rampant in the corporate world). Why is it that if people whom are so annoyed about something, can't come to their senses and at least talk to the person that's annoying them and see if they can work something out? Oh the humanity - not a chance! Mental roadblocks in place! No, instead they just 'call in the brigade' on them (grrrr). It's so... what's an expression for it? I don't know maybe, 'third grade tattle-tale mentality'? Anyway, that's the approach I guess I would take with them (while talking calmly of course). Ask them if they have an explaination as to why they felt it neccessary to 'report you/file complaint with city' BEFORE first confronting you with their complaint? ...and take it from there (read: get as creative, yet to the point with the conversation as you see fit). Lack of integrity? Napolean complex? Anti-social misfit? etc.
Because the are a bunch of whacks out there that might pull out the 9mm the same as the Road Rage guys.
Living on LI also I would've told the inspector to get off my property unless he has a written complaint AND he shows you who filled out the complaint... He HAS to show you both!!! Your neigbor obviously has some resentment of your vette...
I am one of the least tolerant people I know - ask the one's that know me. If you have never really had a confrontation with your neighbor or a problem of which you are aware - try the peaceful approach first. Ring his doorbell, ask him POLITELY what is the source of his angst with you. Tell him that you would like to at least be neighbors if not friends. There is nothing to be gained by contacting the various authorities on each other. If there is something that you've done to annoy him - ask what it is and then apologize and extend the olive branch.
If he refuses your peaceful overture, walk away. Playing games with his lawn and sugar in his gas tank is high school Remember that you have to live next door to this troll, and stooping to his level is only going to escalate this crap and make your life even more miserable.
When someone insists on being on my fecal roster - they cease to exist in my mind. Ignore him if that's the way he wants it, but I think the peaceful approach will probably work....good luck.
Anyone can readily see that we have all levels of mentality represented here on the forum. I have read posts from people who see no problem with violating the city codes and they can't bear the thought of their HOA telling them they are in violation of some rule.
I am a real stickler for obeying the city codes and subdivision rules. I developed my own subdivision and set up rules before I sold the lots and if people didn't want to accept the rules I told them to look somewhere else to build a house. The houses in my subdivision are in the $300,000-$400,000 range so can you imagine how upset I and most residents would be if someone decided to disregard the specific rules everyone agreed to prior to buying their lot. The value of our homes is determined by location, location, location. Just ask any realtor. The following statements are strictly hypothetical and in no way reflect on the original poster.
Suppose I try to sell my house and as the realtor brings a prospective buyer to look at my house they see a neighbor tuning his race car and revving the engine in the next driveway. And then they get out of the car and the stench from the neighbors six hunting dogs in a cage in the backyard is overwhelming. The dog cage is out of sight as it is behind the four junk cars in the neighbors back yard.
The value of my house would drop tremendously because of the actions of my neighbor. Avoiding situations like I have described is the reason cities and HOA's set up rules and laws to protect everyone's property values. Anyone who doesn't like order and cleanliness is welcome to move to the poorer part of town and bask in the filth and unrule of their neighbors who do not strive to have a nice home in a safe neighborhood. I know there are plenty here on the forum who feel the way I do about this topic but we are typically the silent majority. I've got my flamesuit on so for all those out there who are inconsiderate about there neighbors and don't agree with my comments about respecting thy neighbor go ahead and flame me. I am turning 60 years old next month and am a retired Navy Master Chief so I can take the heat.

...it might be interesting to see how many people who replied to this discussion actually own their own homes, rent or still live with their parents...
That's not gonna do anything except give people like you reason to start bull****, which is pretty evident from your post.
Pretty sure even a 15 year old could have an opinion on this and have good reasons for it.

I happen to live in an upscale Country Club so the rules are vey restrictive for the good of all the residents. I previously lived in a very nice neighborhood with CCRs that were not enforced as they should have been.
One Sat. morning my wife and I pull out of the garage to go to breakfast. The neighbor 2 doors down has his car in the middle of the front yard washing it (definitely against the CCRs that he also agreed to when he bought his home). I say WTF. I told my wife turn left, skip breakfast, we are buying a new house in the Country Club up the hill.
I admit I'm sometimes compulsive.
If you don't like the rules then live somewhere else. Some people may like low lifes with s**t all over NOT me
This kind of story about neighbor's reminds me why I moved to the country. Living in the country provides for a lower blood pressure since I don't have to deal with that kind of neighbor plus a multitude of outstanding advantages.
As someone once said " Why can't we all get along".
Sounds like your neighbor is a transplant and needs a good dose of a country boys boot up his wazoo!!!....I hate F-Ing neighbors like yours. They mind everyone's business except their own....
I have a neighbor who leaves a boat in his driveway for months at a time. This is in violation of subdivision rules that he agreed to when he built his house. I don't want to cause problems with him and wonder how to approach the subject. I would never call the officials but it does distract from the look of the neighborhood and property values. It wouldn't hurt to look at this from other prospectives.
How about leaving an anonymous note in his mailbox (just a thought)?
