Looking at the cars side by side of the same era makes it real obvious why the C5 is a step above. I've owned three New Edge Mustangs (04 5spd GT, 03 5spd Mach 1 and 99 5spd Cobra). Couple cars came and then my current C5Z.
The interior is just as "simple" but the engineering into the balance and performance of the C5 is amazing.

I'd like that front splitter on mine, but I would destroy it when autocrossing...

I have no regrets lol.

Got it out at autox. still getting it all figured out. it's a ton of fun. this was just a shakedown lap. just me messing around being violent with the throttle lol. the brake info on this vid is all wrong
this was my best lap. no geometry though
and random lap from outside (we got 10 that day):

I do run the heavier race springs. I've heard complaints that with the softer springs the car sits a lot lower. But i'm very happy with them.

I just now finished reading this entire thread! What a great build thread, answered a lot of questions I had on similar mods done on my convertible. One question...could you elaborate what exactly you had to do to the seat belt retractors to get your seat recliner mech. to clear?
Thanks! Love your Vette....

Hey great build so far. Do you remember the tint percentages used on the brake and reverse lights? I want to mimic your taillights and go a little lighter on the reverse lights.
Also for your sinking clutch pedal, removing the flywheel inspection covers cured that problem for me. Look into the modified ranger method, it gets much more dirty fluid out than the basic reservoir drain/fill.

so the guy that tinted them said he did smoke on the tails and dark smoke on the back up lights. they didn't have a percentage. i believe it was self adhesive tint.

Haha ya. We have more cloudy days than Seattle.
on the topic of the build. I've been pretty hung ho on a blower setup. But I'm kinda considering tossing a cam in it and calling it good powerwise. I was ripping around the other day and it doesnt NEED 600 hp... so I dunno.
Looking at the next phase of the build....
na option
heads/cam/tune $2300
carbon fiber hood $1200
carbon fiber diffuser $1000?
cage: $800
seats: $1100
so like 6k would have a really nicely finished up car...
add another 6k for the blower....
decisions decisions.

I'm thinking cam of some sort is next... or just wait and put a blower on the car...

I'd say sit back and contemplate what you want out of the car. The focus for MY car is a fun daily driven vehicle that is reliable and worthy of a wife date night car all while performing well at autocross.
That being said I have a cam kit sitting in the basement waiting to go in since I have always wanted a cammed car. For autocross it would be beneficial to be around the 400hp mark while not being "too much" for the street or being too radical. And lets be honest a cam in a C5 is a nice sound to hear every day. As you know simple wheel/tire/shocks/swaybars get these cars working very well.
A blower car is very easily driven keeping out of boost and safe as long as the tune is right.
I would question the need for a cage...I don't know you goals but it seems excessive for anything resembling a street driven car. If you are doing it for a racing harness then look into a sleeker Brey Krause harness bar or the like.
I came from a 95 Camaro Z28 that I went crazy on. I got hooked on autocross WAY too bad and the car turned into a loud (exhaust), high spring coilover (800lb front 200lb rear), watts link, removed AC, removed cruise control, smaller steering wheel and swaybars. The car became a nuisance to drive on the street. Hot, smelly, loud rough riding...(I like those things for OTHER reasons ).
Anywho, I told myself "NOT with the C5....NOT with the C5". My end goal will be HCI, full exhaust car. I can't imagine needing anything more than that. I don't see a need for 500+ HP for a street car. The wallet needs to get a liiiitle bigger at that point lol.

I don't need any of this to autox. i would have been fine leaving it stock. It's purely just for me. It's already impractical since it can't go over speed bumps. lol. I drive it on the weekends or go for rips in it. but there's no yardstick that i'm using. I'm just building it as i see it.
I also hear you on the wallet. And there has to be some semblance of value for the $... clutch/blower/tune was like 8500 bucks (maybe a little cheaper if i do the clutch myself). 8500 bucks buys a lot of other cool toys lol. and i'll NEVER see anywhere near that back out of it. so it has to be something i'm 100% sure i want to do.
Cage - i just cage everything. My cj has a crazy cage tied into the frame with the seats tied into the cage. my mustang had a roll bar. I just like them lol.
