The dimming of the HVAC LCD display panel is a fairly common C5 fault.
My 2000 has just suffered from to this one.
I found an EXCELLENT posting on the Corvette Forum, which I can highly recommend. Complete with photos and step by step instructions on how to disassemble the center console and dash to get at the printed circuit board of the HVAC unit, how to get it out and re solder the offending item./items. The post covers both covertable and coup models as they differ slightly, the convert having the center waterfall unit between the seats

I did this work today, it took about 4 hours, plus half hour "Tea and Tiffin" break, cost about £30 for a mini soldering iron and some solder and a illuminated desk lens lamp ( not really necessary but you know what ? one has to look professional even if one is not. It impresses the neighbours) ). I think about £400 to get it done by an auto shop.
If you are not too keen to attack the soldering yourself, pop the printed circuit board into your local computer repair shop, show them the offending joints and ask them to do it for you for a small charge.
Sorry if this post is already on here but hey ho !! every bit helps
Going for a blast now, "Jobs a good un " !!!

SMT resistors are usually stamped with their ohmic value. Maybe it's a cap or a diode? What color is it?
