Upgraded TPMS
#42
Great Info, but I have a couple questions.
After the conversion, can I still use 97-2000 TPS, if I want to. The reason I ask is because I am currently just replacing my rear tires and would prefer not to demount the front tires to replace the sensors that are still working fine. I assume I will need 2001-2004 TPS in all 4 wheels, but would like to confirm before I order parts.
Is there a similar conversion that would allow the use of C6 parts? I like the C6 5 spokes and may consider buying a set of "take off" wheels and tires with sensors already in them especially if there is a "C6 Conversion" that might offset some costs for me making the conversion.

Once you have replaced the receiver you must use the TPS in all tires and FOB's for that receiver.
There is no conversion kit I am aware of to allow the use of C6 TPMS and FOB in a C5. They operate/interface with the cars computer completely different. I would imagine the cost to come up with such a system would be prohibitive.

Thanks for the reply. Thats what I was expecting, but wanted to confirm before proceeding.
Can the TPS be removed/replaced by just breaking the outside bead or does it require dismounting and remounting the tire?

On my 99, the drivers door opens with the key fob, but doesn't lock, it used to sometimes, now not at all. Is this a broken clip on the linkage as I can hear it actuate. But, every once in a while you can hear the door locks open and close while driving.

After several attempts to get a 10312535 - remote control door lock receiver from Gene and several other GM Dealers I was able to get one off of Ebay.
A guy was selling the receiver with 2 new 2001-2004 remotes for $150. Not a super deal, but better than waiting forever. Not sure if he has anymore but you might want to do an Ebay search.
I installed mine last weekend and it is working great. I was not able to get the recommended connector, but was able to wire mine up with parts I pirated out of an old aftermarket remote door lock system I had laying around.
Had to hold magnet (dial indicator magnetic base) at each valve stem for over 5 seconds to get horn honk, but the process went very smooth.
It seems the 01-04 remotes have at least twice the range that my 2000 remote did. I was never impressed with the range of the 2000 remote and the 01-04 remote range seems much better, but I have not yet tested it's limits.
I don't know the PN for the 2000 receiver, but I just looked on gmpartshouse.com and their price is over $300 (List price over $400) so you may want to continue search for 01-04 receiver or shop for a used 97-00receiver.
PM me if your interested in buying mine. It was working fine when I removed it.

"All of you guys that are taking your old 97-00 sensors off, I will buy them"
How much? I am planning to put mine in the For Sale section, but if the price is right I will save that step.

After doing the math, the upgrade kit cost you $294.37. If it were me, I would have spent a third of that and had new batteries installed and been done with it. I guess if I needed new FOBs I would go that way, but not just for cheaper sensors. Just my .02 cents worth.

Batteries are a lot less than $100 BUT......
The upgrade is not for everyone, and initially it was not in my plans. I DIY just about everything and I purchased batteries to replace them in my 2000 TPS. When I took the rear tires off to replace them, I pulled the old batteries out of the OEM TPS and soldered the new ones in.
I got the batteries out with the TPS seemingly in good condition and got one of the batteries installed and making good contact. The other one, I was not getting good contact so I tried to resolder. In the process, I damaged the printed circuit board so I think one of my OEM sensors is now junk.
Many others may be better solderers and have a better success rate.
My regret now is that I did not keep running the OEM sensors until they started acting up. Mine at 32K were still working fine and the batteries I took out only had slighly less voltage than the new ones. They may have failed tomorrow, but they may have also lasted several more years.
I have one good 2000 OEM remote, but the other one has a bad battery contact. I really only need one remote but is nice to have a spare. Also figured the other one might fail someday and they are around $100each.
With the potential for $400+ for new 2000 sensors + another $200 or so for remotes, I thought the upgrade was the way to go.

To anyone who has upgraded their receiver box to the new 01-04 style, I might be interested in buying your 97-00 style receiver box. It needs to be free of defects, and the wires in a condition that I can resolder them if needed.
Please PM me!!!
EDIT: Found one, thanks!

I guess it gets blown since the wires aren't all connected at the same time when they get soldered on the new receiver or something. I know the fuse was perfectly fine a week ago.
Thanks again!

This is a great thread, can you answer a few questions for me?
My dad has a 98 vert and is planning to buy new wheels that to the best of my knowledge will only accept the newer style TPS. For this reason we are thinking of doing the "upgrade". He is looking at the deep dish style thin spokes. Any advice?
When doing this do you have to replace the key fobs as well?
Is the transmitter in the same place on verts as coupes (behind driver side b-pillar area)?
Any other advice?
THNAKS!
