I am to the point of trying to lift the console. I have attached a pic. Do I need to pull the console away from the radio and air conditioning vents?
yes - there are three clips per side in the upper vertical half of the trim piece. Keep working from the bottom toward the upper with your fingers working your grip upward as it unclips.
Sorry for the questions, I just do not want to brake anything. I have the console lifted. How does the plastic ring lift that holds has the boot attached. I went back to the original pictures that were posted. But I can not tell if it snaps off, or do I have to take off the bolts?

If you are asking how the leather boot lifts upward, the boot uses an integral elastic band at the very bottom. Gently pry it outward and upward. But be careful of the plastic shift indicator panel on top of the left side of the boot. A circular orange plastic male tab inserts into the bottom side of the indicator panel underneath the boot. Once the boot is loosened all the way around the shifter module, carefully rotate the left side of the boot bottom upward to disengage the male tab from the female hole underneath the indicator panel mechanism which is lighted as you will remember. It can be carelessly broken.
If I remember correctly, the plastic ring underneath the boot simply has a press tab on each end (front and rear) to disengage to lift the plastic ring itself. I lifted the leather boot separately from the plastic ring when I did my own fix. With the boot rotated upward out of the way, the plastic tabs are more easily spotted and unclipped.

If you look at my post (#18 on this thread)
I explain with pictures how to release the shift boot clips.
From my post:
there are (2 prong) release clips located on the shifter boot housing (one towards the dash side and the other towards the center console side). To release these clips, you need to pinch the tabs together while pulling up on the shift boot at the same time.

Hi all, I appreciate this post. My 08 has had this problem intermittently until today when it decided I couldn't leave the garage. This will take care of the problem I am sure. I was certainly not ready to spend the cash for a new shifter at the dealer.
Thanks a bunch!
Kenneth
Mine got stuck in D yesterday all i can do was shift between Drive and Neutral and Dealer said i need a new shifter assembly to fix it so i decided to give it a go
Removed console etc and found out that Parking lock is jammed and locked

Huge thanks thats some well saved dollars
precisely what forced the issue for me as well. Found myself stuck with only Drive and Neutral. Could not shift back to reverse or park.

I think the car is somehow confused and caused the problem. Funny thing is when i released the lock and put in back in to park, it started working normally.
Does anyone have the part number for the OEM shifter assembly? Noticed everyone disabling the lock out, but I may sell my car soon and am concerned about the liability of leaving it modified? Is the shifter difficult to install?

Before selling it, just undo the tie back. The shifter will work as intended. Just wait a bit longer before shifting from Park.
BTW, the shifter part # is 20916957, or 20916956 or 22744825, or 20916960
Corvette 2005 is 15277559, etc.
It depends on the shifter boot stitching color in later models.
the 2005 has a few numbers as well.
It would be best to call Cultrag to get the exact one for your car.
My part was removed many posts back. If I was to sell it tomorrow, I would tell them the whole story and if they still didn't want to buy it...then f*** them...on to the next buyer.
After working on this for 4 hours, I got everything apart except for the actual shifter. I have a 2009 auto and took the console out partially like in the post. I removed the boot around the shifter but could not get close to the part that locks the shifter in park. I could reach it with my finger but did not look anything like your pictures that were posted here. I will try to add the pics of what I had apart. Now I have put it all back and need a new battery.

Thanks for the feedback. I’m thinking of changing the shifter assembly myself. After a few calls, I found the correct GM part number 21593058 for my 2006 from “thatgmpartsguy.com” for $150. Has anyone actually removed the entire shifter assembly? I know there are four mounting bolts and an electrical connector, but not sure how the disconnecting and reconnecting of the rod with the hole that goes into the tranny works? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

For the auto transmission vettes, there are no shifter rod(s) connecting the shifter to the rear transmission. It is a wire cable enclosed within a cable casing. The casing is fixed at the front to the console tunnel and fixed at the rear to the tranny housing. After removing the 4 - 10mm nuts at the shifter module, carefully lift the module and rotate the shifter top **** to the left side so that you can see inside the console tunnel from the right side. You will need a screwdriver to separate the cable end eyelet grommet from the bottom of the shifter end pin. WARNING: proceed carefully not lifting the shifter module anymore than absolutely necessary to reach the cable end to disconnect. The cable is quite stiff and prone to breaking if lifted too far. Plan on replacing the cable end grommet as it is now so brittle that you may damage it during either disassembly or later reassembly. Hope this helps!!
