I for one am happy to admit that my Corvette is obsolete. Actually, it was made mostly-obsolete in the Fall of 1962, when the first C2's were sold, with 100% obsolescence kicking in a couple of years later when disc brakes and big-blocks were introduced...
Had my first chance to see the C7 in person this past Saturday at Laguna Seca (the car in the photos a bit above), and it looks pretty slick, although I am not ready to admit liking the new rear end and non-round tail lights yet.
The hydro-formed (I assume) aluminum frame/unibody was interesting, and they had a carbon fiber fender sitting there that was amazingly light.
I wonder if there will be a version with wide white-wall tires?
Respect? Those who worry so much about the lack of respect from the HEAD OF THE CORVETTE TEAM ARE BLOWING TADGES STATEMENT OUT OF CONTEXT TO THE MILLIONTH DEGREE..
If a c6 owner doesn't care for the c7 that's fine...yet please realize there are trolls here as well pretending to be corvette enthusiasts and then go on and on about how the new c7 is terrible..
From what I can see..the c7 is a nice evolution of the c6 which I own...
I believe the technical improvements in certain areas are what was being discussed when the gentleman used the term "makes the c6 obsolete"
Let's consider RESPECTING THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO WORK ON CORVETTE AND THE PROBABILITY THEY WERE THANKFULLY CAUGHT UP IN THE EXCITMENT OF THE IMPROVEMENTS.....NOTHING MORE...
Unless people prefer to act insulted...then just ignore and accept my apology for stating my opinion..
Very excellent post.
Lots of intelligent, dedicated individuals at GM have put their heart and soul into this new generation of Corvette. The overwhelming majority of people on this forum see the new model as great step forward. The car is receiving high marks at this point from the automotive press as well.
The C7 Z51 is heavier than the C6 Z06 and has less horsepower. Look up the specifications. What is it you don't understand ?
I'll tell you what I don't understand. I don't understand why a loyal Corvette owner feels the need to frame the question that way. Why on Earth should a base C7 be compared to a Z06? For goodness sakes the Z06 is tens of thousands more money. The ZR1 is well over $100,000 and you know it. I bought a 2005 base C6 with an LS2 and loved it. Thought it was way better than the C5 (that's why I bought it)! They came out with the LS3 and I bought it with the Z51 package because (you guessed it) I thought it was better. They came out with the GS and I loved it. Had to save my pennies and bought it in 2011 because.........Note I didn't get the Z06 or ZR1. I couldn't afford them. I still can't. That doesn't take away from these great cars and it doesn't take anything away from the C7. Corvette has raised the bar with the C7. Anyone with an open mind can see that. Stop the C6 Z comparos as they make no sense and serve no purpose. Surely anyone with a modicum of common sense can see that GM will come out with future models that mirror their development with the Z06 and ZR1. The C7 has arrived and it will set the standard for years to come. I still love my C6 but come on guys, accept the fact that thousands of people feel the same way I do. WE CAN'T WAIT TO GET OUR HANDS ON THIS GREAT CAR!!!!!!
First off your comparing a C7 Z51 to a C6 Z06? Apples to Oranges there.
2nd...where are you getting your data from? To the best of my knowledge no official release from GM on the HP has been disclosed. Speculation is around 450hp. Z06 has 505. Not exactly far off. When you add this to the fact that the C7 has many technological advancements over the Z to harness and use its HP more efficiently (such as planting the HP down better, better transmission and Gearbox ratios) well it's anybody's guess. Bottom line is it will definitely give a C6Z a run for it's money and when the new "performance model" comes out in a year or two. That will be the model that should be comparable (or replaceable) to the Z06.
just my 02.
Yes no kidding that it is an apples to oranges comparison. I was simply addressing the original posters response. I don't believe for a minute that a C7 Z51 will give a C6 Z06 a run for the money. The additional horsepower and lesser weight play a big part. Its as simple as that. I do have every confidence the C7 Z06 will outrun a C6 Z06.
What a ridiculous ad hominem, because someone owns a C6 they can't be objective about the C7? In the back of my mind when I bought a 2011 GS, I always wondered, "what if the C7 is better?" I was eagerly (and nervously) awaiting the C7 to see if I liked it better and if so, I was going to seriously consider trading in my '11 C6. I put off all mods to keep the warranty honored until then.
Then the C7 was shown and I didn't like it. Still don't. Perhaps it will grow on me with time. But I am definitely not in love. I can look at 100+ pages of post-your-C6 pr0n on CF. I can also do this with the C3. I just can't see myself doing that with the C7.
Regarding the "obsolete" comment, it isn't about whether the C7 will have some major functional improvements over the C6 (of course it will). It's about respect for tradition and one's customers. GM and its minions were stupid to use the term "obsolete" while still selling C6's. It makes loyal customers not trust them. Just a dumb and unnecessary thing to say.
Well said.
It's strange how a lot of members get their panties in a twist if someone says some critical about the C7 because none of them own one yet! They are remarkably thin-skinned and defensive about a car they don't have! At least if a C6 owner says they resent Tadge's comment, they have the right, because they freakin' own the car being slighted!
But, I do have to answer your question about the C7 being better. It IS. It is from a technical standpoint - and it damn well better be since it's the newer generation.
I've said it before and I've said it again: there's a good chance I'll get one in a couple years. That is, if the looks/styling grow on me. I'm still undecided on that part. Want to get a good look at one in person and get comfortable with it. I know myself well enough that sometimes I'm not 100% about a new model immediately but it grows on me over time. But yes, like a lot of people here, it's not love at first sight.

Yeah, there are people who get their guns out if they get looked at the wrong way, too. C6 owners who get upset about one of the great guys at GM making an enthusiastic comment about the C7 are the thin skinned ones.
This idea that Tadge was bashing the C6 is stupid, and I am a C6 owner.

I have a thread on Michelin PSS tires (so, you will appreciate this ) on M3Post that has gone on for a couple of years now and has over 700 replies (a small number compared to Bill's epic thread here) and I'm still damn proud

Well, I'm not one of those that feel slighted. The dude is trying to talk up his baby, and yes, the technology promises to be impressive. The C6 is a great car and if I ever had any doubt, a quick spirited drive would dispel that notion.
Bear in mind that Chevy doesn't always get it quite right. Look at the bloated elephant they call the 5th gen Camaro.

Of course they don't always "get it right". Nobody does. But the Camaro is a proven example of them doing it right and their sales over the Mustang and their excellence at the track testing the last three years certainly provide the evidence.

I know sales have been good. I see the numbers. Lots of people who never bought a Camaro or a "muscle car" for that matter stepped up and bought one.
We have owned ELEVEN 4th Gen Camaros over the years... and haven't bought a single 5th Gen. While the 1LE and upcoming Z28 are a little bit interesting, I have no use for 4000 pound Camaros.
So, we sat out this Camaro generation and bought Corvettes instead.
Might sit out the C7 and go back to Camaros if the 6th Gen turns out to our liking. They have, in so many words, admitted their foul up by saying the 6th Gen will be lighter.

I certainly agree that it needs to lose weight and size.
As an aside, I do find it interesting that the Camaro team seems to be winning their fair share over the Ferraris and such in Grand Am.
