I guess I'm being overly cautious. Been screwed to many times before, and almost expect to be screwed. That's pitiful when customer service has gotten to that point.
I can name you countless brand new items that I have bought over the last few years that have failed or broken within months.

Man this just gets more and more drug out. Hope that the inspection comes back in your favor. I don't know how it couldn't. Like i said earlier, to do that much damage, i don't think the engine would run if it was timing. Problem probably started as soon as you cranked it over. Cracked cylinder = water = broke piston. This thread is so big, takes forever to read every post. Hope you get what you duely deserve.
Please tell us you paid by credit card???I am ASE certified in engine repair and no way, no how did you cause this! All this talk about detonation is poop too!If your timing was so advanced to cause this, the engine would have cranked so slow you would have noticed it!! Please call your credit card company and tell them that this company sent you a defective engine and would like them to credit you back.Most times they will credit you back and put the burden back on the merchant.
I was pretty **** about getting the distrib. dropped in just right. No hesitation, bam first turn of the key, fire!! And a strong fire, not a weak got to give her some gas. We backed the timing down because we couldn't get the idle low enough initially.
I did indeed pay with a credit card. $ 2,684 worth. I don't think the damage happened on start up, but on my 1/2 mile cruise. It was running fine when I left the garage, but started laboring not even a 1/4 mile down the road after I hit it pretty good. Turned around and it died. Cranked up again and I hit her again. Slowed down to turn back on my street and she died again.
I think the damage occured right after I hit her the first time. Never got over 50, and did not put it to the floor, but it was a good lick.
Not sure but I think she downshifted to 2nd when I hit it, and barked the tires on this automatic!!
I've still got to go thru the proper steps in order to make my case. Hopefully I will come up with enough ammo to convince them to send me a new motor, or refund. We shall see.

from my experience, most of those crate engine manufacturers will only warranty the labor, but not the parts. In your case, it seems like a case of poor quality control if there were cracks and there were ring gap problems..and they should replace it at no cost...especially since it happend so soon after purchasing the engine.
RedShark....your post reminded me to ask what specifically needs to be checked other than ring gap. I'm thinking actual bore size vrs. piston size, bore wall thickness, and ....??
Need to come up with a checklist for the mechanic....don't want to miss anything cause I won't have a second chance to do this.
yeah, I know that. I think water got in that one cylinder and could not compress and therefore broke the piston. I also think cold coolant cracked the cyl. wall. ...or maybe just the added pressure of a heck of a lot of water in that one cyl. You don't have just one problem but a progression of problems.
OK, take a deep breath and step back. It is real easy to get all upset and lose objectivity and go down a path that you may later realize is not right. I know from experience. I think YOU have the upper hand! You have the engine, and from my experience with credit card co's, you will get your money back if the situation is not settled. Do contact the cc company immedietly. Then tell the engine co that you installed the engine as directed and it failed. You don't care why, and are not going to expend any more time and money for a guaranteed product that failed. Ask for a new engine or a refund. Their option. They have alot to lose. I think you will get your money back. Then tell them you will set their engine on your front lawn and they can pick it up or you will send it back if they send you the shipping money. You bought a complete bolt in engine and it failed in, what? 1 hr? Not your fault. I think it is time to nudge them into reality. This would be a small loss for them, but a huge chance to get alot of good will. Don't go bonzi bezerk, but be firm. Good luck.

I personally would not check anything else..you've done more than enough by pulling the intake and heads. Let them check the ring gaps, and whatever else they may find. I don't understand why those guys just didn't ask you to pull the engine, send a freight company to pick it up so they can check it out. I know you don't want to go thru the trouble of pulling it out again, it can be a real PITA...but look at all the time and trouble you've spent thus far.
I would try for a refund. The replacement engine might not be any better. You'll end up spending more money, time and aggravation than it's worth. Get out with the least amount of loss and spend the extra dollars for a quality built stroker, JMO......

how do you measure or check for core shift? thats when the engine was cast and the mold shifts so you have a thin spot in the cylinder wall.....it sure would be hard to blame you if that cylinder wall was a minimal thickness compared to what it should be...it would also explain why only one cylinder failed...perhaps it failed under load rather then detonation

Glen....what you say has great merit, but.....The warranty specifically states that "Blueprint Engines, will, at its sole discretion, replace defective parts or a complete engine."
How can they make a judgement without seeing the failed product? I wish it were as easy as saying what you said. If it were my business, I wouldn't just say I'll send you a new one without at least looking for negligence first.
I don't blame them for wanting to take a look. It also helps them troubleshoot against future problems. They said the would send/pay for the truck freight back to their shop.
I'm going to have it inspected to cover my ****. It should only cost me about between 120 to 180 bucks, tops. Good insurance if you ask me.
