Clarence tried to call, but I was on the other line....said he would call back on the message.

Me and Clarence are gonna be best friends....for a while, anyway.

You have 60 days to dispute a credit card transaction...you did use a credit card...didn't you? If your under 60 day limit, put it into dispute immediatly. If the engine supplier makes good, pull the dispute.

The point earlier about writing a script prior to talking to the company is good one. It puts all of your thoughts on paper and, in case things get heated or emotional, you won't risk forgetting a key detail. Document, document, ......

Good luck!!!

If you plan to file a dispute with the credit card company start keeping a timeline of what you did, who you talked to, and what the resulting outcomes were ASAP. I had to file a disputed charge about a year ago and they require extremely detailed information on the transaction. You need to prove that #1 they did not keep their end of the deal and also #2 that you made a good faith effort to resolve the situation. Keep any faxes, e-mails or other correspondence you get as this will be required as "evidence".

Good luck!

Too many crate motor horror stories here. I've said this before, and I'll say it again. It may cost more, but I'd rather deal with a local engine builder. It's not that hard to get references from your local car clubs.

Okay...talked with Clarence and got the go ahead to pull the intake. Got to call him back and report my findings. Does not look like it was the intake gasket or the intake. Wanted to get y'alls input before I talked with Clarence again......

More nasty pics below......

Hard to see but gunk on bottom of carb valves....

I think it's a blown head gasket. Did you say you had it idling for a couple of hours? A new motor will generate more heat than one that's broken in. It could have overheated while idling (water pump spinning slowly and not much air blowing on the radiator) and blown the head gasket then.

It may not be the cause, but the intake gaskets look wrong for the application. I see the heat riser ports don't line up at all on the gasket...I wish I was there to help you on this one!

Providing your gauge is working correctly, it must have been an assembly problem. It probably blew right before you noticed the steam.

Because the motor was already assembled (by them) I can see no way for them to dispute your claim...If they are ANY kind of a decent company they will treat you good and take care of the problem......You should ask (Demand Nicely) for a new (different) motor......They are going to have to eat the loss on this one....You do not want to piece this motor back together and spend the next few months or more wondering if it's going to break down at any moment.......Good luck

Just get them to ship you another crate motor. If they do not want to do that and want you to do all of the foot work on troubleshooting the motor then tell them you will back charge them for your labor. OR just send a motor and use the same packing to ship the old one back.

I guess I infered that from the title of the thread. I'm still going with a blown head gasket.

I also agree that you don't want this motor back without being completely torn down and checked out by an objective machinist.

Okay...ole Clarence now had me pull the plugs on the side that was shooting water out of the header. Pulled the plugs and 2 and 4 looked fine, 8 looked fouled but dry, and 6 was white and wet. Not fuel wet either....
