I think it would be wise to keep quiet AND NOT aggravate the vendor. The more you speak, the deeper you dig your hole.

Let the vendor first examine the engine, let them tell you what the resolution will be...then and only then get excited one way or the other. In the meantime...SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.....

I sure hope it's just a gasket. What a bummer.

Should I drain the oil and water, retorque the heads, and try again? Any chance the head just got loose? Or do I definetely need to pull the head?

Man crate engines are crap!!!!!!!!

They are targetmasters made in Mexico

Let me tell you why yours was a hunk of crap and did what it did

the gasket faces on the heads are thin as crap pair that up with the engine block where the deck is almost half as thin as a hi nickle unit. must i not mention the steel gasket

GOOD LUCK!
I do auto machining and engine building

we do not guarraty any speed engines as they are usually tortured.

most of these engines are crap that was thrown together for a quick overhaul meaning new ring and bearings and if something is totally shot
also they do not balance this condition either if a new piston is thrown in

now you give them the engine they will swear to go you did it god luck if you follow this advise

Do your self a favor and go find a hi nickle core at a core yard and get it tanked bored and new new cam bearings and freeze plugs dont be talked into doing decking unlees your app calls for it or the block is untrue more then .002 crass laterally

get the crank cut and get a kit from engine kits.com balance the pistons your self on a gram scale and you can get away with doing the rods but not side to side but that is over rated unless you are going all out

the crank should be done on a hines machine

here is a counterweight trick

keep your old pistons to so you can match them to your old if you are talking less then 20 grams then you dont need to balance the crank

also if the pistons are a lot lighter or heavier

you will see drill marks maybe 3 on every counterweight in the engine

the trick is to weigh your old pistons if you are heavier drill those hole out and keep count of the metal on a scale to you reach the weight of the old pistons if you are light use an epoxy like marine tex and a little lead and gue in the holes to match the piston weight difference

not that hard

tools

torque wrench
balancer puller
gear puller
feeler gauge
plastigage
valve spring tool

all this crap will cost a bean a bean 50 or barrow it from a friend

tank the heads and get a 3 angle valve job and get new valve liners

use your old springs if the cam isnt out of site and add .030 shims see blow or get new one if using a cam bigger then .480 see below for specs

now the trick i reveal go buy how to rebuild you small block chevy or how to hot rod it

with the price of the book, machining and an engine kit a sb should cost you less then 800 let them balance and add 300

if you want with the 1000 you save buy a set of used performance heads off ebay and get the valves done less then 500 and put the other 500 on a hundred to one horse.....

get the point

Default Good luck I am with you.

I am also from the Chevelle list. I am with you and I am also following along. I am hopping for the best for you. I feel the builder should stand up after finding out that it was not your fault. Good luck MVM

No, I don't get the point. If this is the way you rebuild engines, I can see why you don't guarantee them.

Plastigage? If you can't get your hands on a set of micrometers, you shouldn't be touching the inside of an engine.

I don't think they were unfair until now. I wouldn't give someone their money back for something that for all I know might not even be broke. As far as the email I received, dude sounds p1$$ed. I myself am amazed at how far this thread has reached. My brother in law sent me an email yesterday telling me where to find this thread. And we don't even visit the same sites.

Plastigages will give you ballpark numbers. Don't be so quick to jump on this guy, he's only giving sound advice to a newb engine assembler. If you've read the entire thread, this is his first attempt at assembling.

Regarding mikes, most home users don't own a set of mikes and can't justify the cost for a one shot deal.

If you venture into this guy's shop, how much you want to wager you will see the mikes in use?

Does anyone know if Norris Marshall (owner and founder of Marshall/Blueprint Engines) is still involved with the company day to day?

I have fowarded a couple of emails straight to Marshall and requested they be given to him. Surley the he is aware of this? Maybe not, but if I worked for him, he would be.

Wonder if he is an old hard **** that would kick me in -----? Or, is he a man that has called the "boys" on the carpet over this? Tick, tick, tick....

You think they refused delivery???

I give you credit for keeping your cool (until that email surfaced, at least). And I agree that you have made no negative comments towards the builder. Other people may have, though . I hope that this can be resolved with both parties being satisfied with the outcome. You get a new stroker, Blueprint gets a crapload of good PR. Everyone is happy.
