Yeah Bill, unfortunately that white you see in the photo is actually primer. Yup! All the way through the clear and base to the grey stuff! Not sure of I just have to sand the clear off and shoot the scratch then re-clear or if I have to sand base and the clear off.
I know it is the pits, but with all that work, I would suck it up and reshoot base and clear on the back half. Touching up metallic paint is really really tough. I am pretty sure you do not have to sand all the clear off. Just make sure to scuff it up good and shoot base right on top then re-clear. You might be able to just shoot the base to the top of the quarter and lightly mist the base on the rest of the area for your blend.
I cannot tell you how many times I have redone work on my 70.

You have come sooo far!

If all I have to do is scuff the current clear and sand out the scratch, I could do that in a weekend with no problems. Can you just confirm that is what needs to happen?

Without seeing the scratch it is really hard to say. I would consult with the best painter you can find. You may need to seal the damaged area as a precaution after sanding or you may get some lifting. If it starts to lift you have a bigger problem.
Any chance you have a piece to experiment on?
A lot will depend on what paint you used. Consult with the supply company from where you purchased the paint.
What I do know is my 70 corvette BC/CC had a crack develop on the fender because I put too much pressure on it to gain leverage to break a bolt loose. Paint was about two months old at the time. I wanted to cry. The crack had to be beveled out and repaired with fiberglass so this is a little more involved than just a scratch. Once the repair was complete the area was sealed before shooting the base. We just scuffed the surrounding clear. Ultimately we re-cleared the entire front less the hood and headlight doors. It turned out as close to perfect as possible with no lifting.
Keep in mind I used a very experienced painter to shoot mine and he just lightly misted the base other than around the repaired area.
I am sure it will turn out fine. Just one more bump in the road.
No we only went down to the original primer and started sanding from there. Maybe you can shed some light on how to level it from here. It makes sense to , to do that then primer, then guide coat and then block sand to get the best results. Just not sure how to level the original promer
Scott, the only really "right' way to fix that is to touch up that scratch with base, scuff the entire panel, and reshoot (say, two well-reduced coats) clear. You could touch it up with a brush and it might polish out OK, but if you really want to fix it right the only right way to do it is to refinish the whole panel...
Thanks everyone, I spoke to a painter I know today who does really good work. This was his advice: since there is such a sharp line on the top of the fender, take a piece of tape and run along the top edge leaving a about a third hanging over. Good the edge back to keep the clear from over spraying the top. Sand out the scratch very slowly. He said if I just pile on the base it could burn the surrounding clear causing it to lift. Scuff the panel and re clear. He said if done right, it should be very har to tell there was ever a repair. That didn't sound too difficult and I will see how it goes over the next few days and post some pix.
He also said many would say this will not work but he does it all the time. Hahahaha
boy no post for two whole weeks? hopefully the weather down there hasn't kept you from getting your vette out and about fc. It certainly has kept mine in the garage here in iowa.
I am sorry!!! I didn't use you guys I got tied up for a few weeks..... I have not got to take her in the date, but will soon.. She put me on a couple projects I had neglected all winter. Hahahaha! I am about done and will post some stuff soon.
FC, After 41 years of marriage, I can tell you, pay back can be tough. If you were ever wondering while your head was under the hood, why you were getting to spend so much time with your car and nothing being said, it's time to pay the piper. Actually just giving you a rough time. I'm married to the most awesome person I have ever known and sounds like you are also. Good luck.

We have been married 23 years ( I was 22 & she 19) we have a great life together.
I have had so much change recently, I am trying to getting business off the ground while working full time and getting the yard back in shape for the summer time swimmer rush! Hahaha I had a company I started a few years back and had to shut down for a couple years now and had a merg opportunity come up on the last month. I will say the scratch knocked the wind out of me a little but think I will try to get the doors put back together this week to start driving next week.
Me too I'm glad you're still moving on this vette. I thought painting it might push you over the edge and have you walk away. Kind of the same reason why I advised leaving the trans for another day.
My advise now is shoot a simple color like white or black and enjoy the summer. This winter, you'll see all the little mistakes and you'll have a few more dollars to get closer to your vision. The bonus is you'll have a smile all this summer and fall
Just a tip for when you get ready to do the burn out video, wiped the areas behind the rear wheels down with vegetable oil, that way the molten rubber doesn't stick to your new paint.
She finally got her date!!!! We had so much fun and the car ran great!!! Ugh gotta get the AC now though, wow it was hot! Hahahaha maybe it won't be to hard to install!
I am leaving the paint for now and will do a little color sanding when I get bored and the polish it out a little more.
of course I still need to do a few things but we can at least drive!
