I did set the pan up there and the gasket really doesn't seem right the way it fits...I read in Vizard's book there are actually two types of pans, one early modle and one older. Do they use different gaskets?
looking great, the one piece rear main seal as opposed the 2 piece rear main seal uses a different oil pan and I assume a different gasket as well

My rear seal is 2 piece so I would assume they would have sent the right gasket for it.

The Felpro one piece I used fit the oil pan perfectly and it was for a pan with a two piece rear main seal.

I bought mine from summit and believe the description on their web site talks about a one or two piece rear main seal. You can always ask their tech department too.

The best part is absolutely no leaks

I used the Felpro gasket set I got from O'Reilly's, for $50 it had everything i needed. Two piece rear main seal is the way to go for me. Should it wear out and need replacing, it can be done without tearing the engine out again. The felpro kit came with a 4 piece oil pan gasket, which i wasn't real wild about. Its kind of a hand full to put together, if you get a one piece it will make things a lot easier.

Engine is looking sharp fatcat!

What cam? Most have 4 degrees advance ground in.

It's not uncommon for theose chrome covers to be off a little. TDC alignment with the damper and pointer have nothing to do with the cam timing.

You can even see it in the pic that the pointer is bent down a little but your gonna be trial and error getting your timing perfect anyway. Bend it back a little and forget it

I went with one of these...
http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performan...51265/10002/-1

It is adjustable so I zeroed it at TDC to eliminate any confusion. It is also very easy to read along with the numbers that come on a non-stock damper. Or you can try the degree tape on a stock damper though I have had problems getting it to stick on the damper in the past.
I can't tell from the pic of your cover if the tab is welded or bolted on. I'm guessing it is tack welded like most of the others.
You're making great progress...
MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Where is the #1 piston? It should be at TDC on compression stroke. Hard to tell compression stroke from exhaust stroke with no head or valvetrain, but TDC, anyway. Do you have a piston stop to measure TDC with? I do believe that cam has 4 degrees ground in, so if you're going by the timing gear dots, you should be right on, unless I'm missing something.

I am going by the timing dots, wouldn't that be TDC? I eyeballed the piston and realize it be a little off but will have to try a stop prob to make sure.

Hey buddy! Could you elaborate on this for me a little?
I am trying to understand the TDC part you are talking about.
