Default Installing sound proofing

Are there any videos out there on DIY installing sound dreading material and recommendations for which products to use? Its winter time, so If I can't drive it then its time to mod it.

If you have a tight budget, you could go with this product. I did my entire interior with it. Not only does it reduce road noise, it's cooler in the Florida heat too! I used a 4" foam paint roller (with the foam ripped off) as an applicator. It was a fun project actually.

What's your estimated sound reduction or did you happen to message the decibel levels before and after?

I didn't measure before and after. Although, once I got everything put back together, the first time my wife went on a ride with me, she commented right away that it seemed quieter and she didn't even know I was doing this. I had it all apart doing my widebody conversion so she didn't see the sound deadening going in. I did it in stages. When I did the rear hatch area including the rear wheel wells, the road noise was greatly reduced. I think the doors were the next thing most noticeable.

I've used Crazy Cowboy's insulation kits in 3 Vettes including my current 19 GS. He kits have all the pieces pre-cut. There are multiple threads on the forum with great DIY instructions. Doing it solo, took me two days. Yes, I was going slow and being careful.

Default Some sound proofing done on my C7

I installed some NVX 9mm butyl sound deadening recently. I put it on the floor, both sides of the tunnel, on the bulkhead behind the seats, and on the trunk floor. I did not cover the channels housing wiring, or over the metal plate in the passenger side at the firewall. My measures were made on a blacktop interstate going 70. Before was 72 DB. After was 69 DB.

a buddy who helped me said there isn’t room to place it on the outer skin of the doors because the glass is too close, and the fasteners holding the wheel wells aren’t strong enough to hold the extra weight of the sound deadener. But I’ve seen in the forum that others have placed it in doors and wheel wells. Have you had any issues in these places?

I covered the tops (insides) of the wheel wells and inside the doors without issue.

FYI, when doing sound proofing, I’m pretty sure the elevated plate on the passenger side firewall covers either the ECM or the BCM. The space around it should not be covered as it allows airflow to cool it down. Best to cut around it and leave the gap in tact.

the shape of the roller for bonding the sound deadening to the surface looks like a wallpaper seam roller which i already had. It worked for most of the job but eventually broke. Avoid that frustration, bite the bullet and get the metal roller.

also, if you have an iPhone, there’s a free app called decibel X for taking before and after measurements.

if you’re doing the doors and have taken off the door panels, that’s a good time to install window tint. A good tint will eliminate UV and reduce IR.

Absolutely none. I did this on my C5 and it did absolutely nothing for sound deadening. Anyone who thinks it is is lying to themselves. Maybe it does lower the decibels by 1 or 2 but that's not enough to notice a difference and definitely doesn't warrant the hassle of installing it.

Ok, so we could debate the subject of noise reduction 'til the cows come home, but it IS possible that it reduces or changes certain frequencies. I mean, perceived sound is subjective to the individual. I don't buy into the "placebo effect" in this case. It may not be uber-scientific, but it's definitely an improvement.

I agree. For me the perceived reduction was non-existent. People also say new run flats are quieter than the 10yr old originals and for me the noise is the exact same.

I personally have helped on a few of these projects, truthfully it did not solve the problem with the noise they were attempting to eliminate.. it was a harmonic resonance that it could not hide. In my humble opinion I like hearing the engine and the road, makes me feel more connected to my surrounding when driving fast. Maybe skip the soundproofing and get headers?

I installed the double extreme insulation kit in my 19 GS (took a long weekend for this old fart). The instructions were very helpful and the way the pieces were cut and labeled really helped. The kit cut down on the heat and noise. Good luck.

If you are looking to turn your car into a Cadillac, this product is not for you. The Blockit is designed to quiet down/take the edge off of tire, road and some exhaust noise in 60 seconds.

lol, As far as reviews, These are all from members here on the Corvette Forum we had gathered ...

The mat looks very polished in the rear cargo area so I don't think that I will add an aftermarket cargo mat on top of it.

While commuting to work this morning on the freeway I really did notice a difference. I did not have to crank the radio way up and the voices and music were much clearer.

If you are looking for a real easy sound insulation solution I would recommend this product.

First drive to work this morning and I can tell you it makes a big difference. Those that say it doesn't must have some really frickn' loud exhausts.

It took the resonance away that the road puts through the rear hatch area (hatch floor, plastic) and the road noise from the tires is probably cut in half.

There's also a noticeable "quietness" inside the rear now that I never had before. I always had that "white noise" behind my head from all the noises coming from the rear hatch area. Now it sounds like the entire car is quieter.

It made such a difference I am no longer worried about putting dynamat or peel and seal in my car. I will however still do the peel and seal on the floor boards under the car because now that the rear is so much quiter I hear road noise from under the car... lol.

Overall, it's a great buy and I'm glad I bought mine!!

Not the kind that requires you to remove the carpet or anything. Just put two pads behind the seats and one pad in you truck, or cargo area for a coupe. I drove my car at 70+ MPH for a good ways last night and WOW!!! Much smoother and peacefull sound. The stereo sounded better and the car just seems so much quieter in the cab area. I have had a C6 coupe and now have a C6 vert, and I promise you, this thing works! Just wanted to shout out a nice mod.

Even with flaps closed, the drone was very annoying below 1,950. Most of my cruising is between 1,700 and 1,950 rpms in 6th gear with 4.10 gears. With the blockit installed, the drone is gone at these rpms with flaps closed. Not just reduced, but gone. Below 1,700 drone is reduced to a bearable level.
With muffler flaps open the drone is reduced with the kit, but still louder than my comfort level. But it's a moot point now.

I was exhausted after driving it for 3-4 hours. The '15 Z06 was significantly quieter and rides more smoothly....think Chevy vehicle engineers softened the suspension bushings. Seems to be well known that the '15 is a quieter car. Just can't believe how such a relatively inexpensive and easily installed kit can be so effective. So bottom line: I'd recommend(your hearing my vary) .

I can't say it's equal to the kits that require full interior dis-assembly since I didn't do that, but I definitely feel there is value in the product. If you are in Southern Calif and want to try in your car, come by and we'll throw it in and you can hear for yourself. Or just take my car for a test drive.

Super easy install - drop in and forget it. I have a coupe.

Big rear mat had the slits for rings.

Put my Stingray logo rear carpet on top of the mat and also put the mats behind the seats.

I can tell a difference in noise ; can hear the radio better and believe a long cruise will be far more pleasant.

Really reduced road noise without reducing the exhaust note. Now I don't need to turn the radio up so high.

Must have add-ons. Worth the $$.

Got a chance to "install" today and take a quick ride before the weather arrived. Pleased to say wife and I observed a noticeable reduction in road noise and it was easier to converse.
Thanks!

Two thumbs up for this product.

I guess that's a good test of the sound-deadening ability!

Every night when I leave work I put my laptop bag in the trunk and I think hope the heat doesn't kill this thing. Well since the block it install the trunk with the top up or down seems much cooler. Well worth the price of admission lol.

QUOTE=rblakeney;1596310472]…..Another thing I did was add the Blockit sound deadening mats to the rear hatch area. These things actually work well to attenuate the wind and road noise so that the exhaust sound comes through. I am surprised how well they work for this and it was unexpected.

Using the Decibel X Pro app, I measured 2 - 5 dB lower noise levels on varying roads at varying speeds, which was noticeable, but more importantly, the cargo pad cut down the reverberations from the drum head that is the cargo floor and reduced the noise spikes generated by road joints and seams... The 'Vette is now about as quiet as my '11 Mustang GT 5.0, my previous "touring" car...
The pads aren't cheap, and do add weight, but they attenuate much of the most annoying noise from the back of the car. IMO worth the money.

Best of all, I can really tell a noticeable improvement in road noise inside the cabin. I never measured the db’s before and after the install, but it certainly is quieter and more comfortable.

Unfortunately we sold out and won't have them again until right after the holidays. Feel free to contact us if you have questions.
