Im not a 100% sure but I think the A8's are shifting into 5th towards the end of a 1/4, Thats another shift or two than the A6. I guess my question is does the extra shifting of the A8 equal out and thats why its not alot of time difference??
Well it seems like I am not making a point here since I have never driven an A8. The only point I am making here is that the A6 and A8 are still close as far as quickness and 1/4 mile times. Some members are making or giving assumption that the A8 is so much faster than the A6. We all know by now that the A8 transmission is superior over the A6 in almost every aspect. However, that doesn't mean that A8 is going to destroy the A6 at any given time at the track. As far as mod comparison take this for instance.....Farmer went 11.31@121 with DR's only, Brent went 11.06@125 with Headers, DR's and tune. I believe that headers and tune should be worth at least two tenths. Now for a comparison, Farmer should be able to pull off 11.11 with the same mods but then I would be speculating. And, I would call that very close. Hence, both cars are probably running in the best conditions for drag racing. Just my thoughts and that's all.
I got your point, I just thought you were not getting mine. First off we are comparing stock which means no programming. My point was that the biggest difference is mechanical, when a auto trans shifts it has to disengage and then engage a clutch that is driven by hydraulic fluid. There are some things in that sequence that you can calibrate on the timing of. You also have torque management at play to make sure nothing is damaged during this process. Because the A6 has less gears the spread between the gears is larger so the RPM drop is greater. So what happens during the shift is that you have torque management helping to reduce power in the engine (your foot is full throttle) so that the RPMs drop down to where the clutch for the next gear can fully engage. When this is all done, lets' say you lose 2500 RPMs and it takes a certain amount of time for that to happen. On the A8 the gear split is less, so maybe the RPM's only drop 1500 RPM's. so everything happens faster on the shift. But the shift is not the only issue. Your making your shift at 6000 RPMs, minus 2500 is 3500, this is the new starting point for the next gear. On the A8 your are dropping from 6000 to 4500, right in the meaty part of the power band. This is why the A8 will always be faster comparing apples to apples. Will, yes even making the extra shift, it is still going to go faster. Nothing can really be done about that. Now a new gear in the diff will help because it will change the how easier the engine can accelerate the car from lower RPM after the gear change.

This time I understand your point....thanks for enlightening us about the mechanics/technical part of the A8.
Thank, J Abbot knows alot more than I will ever know about these cars, but I would like to say to all the A6 guys, Dont give up. Everyone on the list is fast and deserves alot of credit. Snorman get your car out, we could use your help! Iv been racing since 1967 and we would not have believed stock cars would be running in the 11's !! Thanks again to tune time, this has been alot of fun!!
Nice run, I ran 11: 85 on my 1st run in June at Richmond, I was amazed all the magazines said 12s, but then we saw Snormans time !

Thanks Farmer.....It always feels good to run quicker than the magazine. Anyway, I had a rough time at the track with spinning issues. Bradenton Track wasn't that good for street tires and not that well prepped. One pass I ran 13 seconds......let out on that pass. Before my very last pass I just smoke the tires to heat them up properly. I could not launch hard as I would like. As you can see, my 60 ft is still not in par with you guys. I believe that my will run 11.70's if I could just get that 60 ft down.

Nice run, what was the temp at the track?
I checked for you, DA was -422, too bad track wasn't prepped better.

Cut a 1.69-1.70 and you will be in the 11.6-low 11.70s. if you are spinning your car can do it on a well prepped track.

Hey Yell03,
I just could not come out as hard......spinning and fishtailing. I definitely can see 11.70's which is my goal in stock form. Actually, I was surprised to see 11.88 with a not so good 60ft.
