Last page a few said newer LT6 haven't reported the ticking noise, is it after the TSB that it was fixed? I guess they fixed it during the engine build so no such problem in 2024 models?

After looking at the LT6 cut away engine that travels with the auto shows in person it makes sense why these engines have issues with the oil being diluted with fuel. The short answer is that the LT6 has a less than ideal placement of the direct injector and no bathtub piston feature. An improved piston design would not be a factor because of the injector placement. See pic below. I believe GM was aware of the issue and that is the real reason the oil weight was increased from the 0-40 used in the LT3/previous engines. IMO there will be higher amounts of fuel in the oil for this design. I also believe this does not mean it will cause widespread failures.

I have been studying this type of issue for many years. I have been following the Toyota, Honda, Ford and Yamaha SHO outboards closely. Toyota and Ford seem to have solved this issue by implementing a two injection system so the engine can idle on upstream port injection and use the DI for power. Honda has been able to make some improvements through changing the fuel mapping of the cold start enrichment.

There’s a TSB for MY24. I took delivery of a 2024 a couple of weeks ago and the valve train is definitely not quiet. The vette tech at the dealership where I bought it said the Z’s he’s PDI’d; sound just like mine. Going to have the pico test to ensure the noise tolerance is within the acceptable range.

is this something GM can fix by 2025 or 2026? Im hesitant to submit my order when theres still little issues that seem like an easy fix. If not, how do you go about this issue just driving hard or making sure the oil gets up to temp?

Took delivery 11/9 @ NCM. 850 mi now, pronounced tick on the left bank, hot and cold- the same. So, no, it's happening in current production. Scheduling w/ dealer in Daytona next week to review TSB and appropriate course of action.

Do you have a newer TSB more current than 6-28-23 Document ID: 6375600 ?

Same doc ID 6375600. However a new revision to TSB #23-NA-115 for the LT6 ticking noise came out earlier this week on 11/21/23. You can find it on the other forum.

it’s basically the same, they added MY24, fixed the typos and added more detail to the cam bearing cap retorque procedure.

My 991.1 GT3 needed an engine replacement prior to delivery, and replacement engines were failing, to this day, they are failing. The 3.8 Porsche motor in that car has a very high failure rate, and i would argue they are the best ICE engine developers/manufacturers in the world. These guys are pushing the envelope and there will be failures at a higher rate than engines that are built for efficiency. In fact one of my company cars, a 2011 Subaru forester, needed a new engine due to durability issue, at 100,000 miles, Subaru did replacemet for free. My wifes Porsche developed chronic oil leaks at 90,000 miles, to repair it was to be 20k. comparing this motor to a vega seems extreme. If you buy a car being pushed like this one, be prepared for failures. If you don't want that buy the C8 SR, that engine is operating within its capabilitiies, and has many many revisions over the years to gain reliability. I think its interesting to hear critics of things and find what they do for a living, and see if they compare to capability to who they are criticizing.

the .1 gt3 was known to have issues from the beginning from the finger follower valve and they granted a 10 year engine warranty. They fixed that issue with the .2 and the 4.0 is bulletproof. But i do agree the high compression performance engines are more prone to failure than a engine that’s designed for longevity

LT6 is pretty close to its limit? while LT2 is more reliable? I just sold my SR and got a Z06, too late now but oh well I am not going to track it, just some drag strip and spirited run and redline here and there, hopefully it will be ok.

Finally someone here tells it like it is.... real truth in this guys post that many need to get acquainted with. ^^^

So many Corvette owners wanted something to finally compete with Porsche...now you have it...an expensive high revving, high HP mid engine car and a true DC transmission. You wanted a Porsche and you now have one...Welcome to the Party..bring your wallet.

Wait until they refuse to fix your DCT and just want to replace it...like Porsche...$17 K. Yes that number is pretty close for a new PDK S installed.

The failure rate of this iteration of GM/Tremec DCT seems really high to me based on comments from owners here, but hopefully by the time the car is out of warranty, (and everyone needs to be thinking about a GM Extended Drivetrain warranty imho), there will be aftermarket options available from Dodson, etc. and your local high performance shop will be able to open the case and fix the issue. 🤞

i got super lucky to get a dealer order z06 3lz with CCB without markup. traded in my c8 z51 today and got the car. When i drive home this afternoon, i did notice there is gas odor smell. is this normal for LT6? my c8 z51 definitely does not smell like this. No leakage anything over the engine.

That’s very strange. I noticed a distinctive smell during break-in — almost a coffee-like smell — representing the oils brining off.

Have you checked the usual suspect areas? Fuel filler, engine compartment? Maybe the guy who filled it sprayed some gasoline. But if it’s in the cockpit with windows up, that’s real strange. You owned a C8 previously so I trust you’re familiar with the strong fiberglass smell.

now you mentioned it, my nose is telling me does not smell like gas. but definitely not high quality coffee smell, i can only smell it with windows down. since i just drove home, it is also in break in period. currently at 36 miles. I checked the suspected areas, seems fine.

I thought it smelled like burnt popcorn but at 175 miles it’s gone

Anyone else feel this sticky thread should be turned into a "C8 Z06 Problems" thread like the sticky in the C8 General forum, instead of one just for the LT6 which is seldomly used due to an extremely low failure rate so far? That was we can consolidate the various DCT discussions and other common threads that clutter the first page of this forum and have repetitive posts/info.
