So get a winch set up in the garage so you can work more than 4 months a year.

I've got it worked out with my husband. We've got a couple bags of sand and I bought a pair of snow tires for the back of the car. When we move the car out in the winter we'll lay down sand in front of the rear wheels and instead of backing the car onto the hoist (which is quite tricky with wet tires) I'll drive it in forwards. Part of this agreement was I was going to have the factory gas tank back in the car before winter so...oops? I don't think hubby will go for the winch idea as I'm not sure what we'd hook the other end up to, I don't think he'd go for hooking it to the hoist.

The car weighs 3000 pounds. If it's a 10% grade you need a 300 pound pull to get it up that hill. Couple of bolts sunk into the cement on big Molly's would do the trick. Five or six hundred pound winch and it's probably going to be a 2000 pound winch would pull it up that little hill no problem.

I'll ask my husband given what you've said. According to the 79 specifications manual the car is 3500 lb. I'm not sure what the grade is going up the ramps but I think its quite a bit more than 10%, perhaps a 30 degree angle?

30 degrees 3500. Could be around a thousand pound pull. How many feet do you have to pull it up that hill?

Ummm, not sure without going to measure it, perhaps 2 &1/2 to 3 feet.

So you are only lifting half the car at a time. 30% grade. .3 times the front 1700 is 510 lbs. Then the same when the back half lifts while front is level.

Yes, that's to get on the hoist. There's also perhaps a car length leading up to the hoist outside that is slightly uphill, maybe a 10 or 15 degree angle. I can probably drive the car most of the way up that in the winter with the regular tires although I have to stop before the hoist to make sure the wheels are lined up with the ramps on the hoist. Without the snow tires and sand when there's snow on the ground its pretty tricky to try and get enough momentum to go up the slight slope on the ground and then up the much sharper slope on the ramps. We had a bit of snow on the ground in the spring when we tried this last year and I accelerated a little too hard with the rear wheels on the hoist and the front wheels on the ground and went sideways a bit and almost dropped the rear wheels off the hoist - that'd been quite a mess if that happened! The manual transmission makes this all a lot more tricky.

What do you mean hoist? Is there a lift in the garage that the tires sit on? That's something you probably want to pull the car up onto every time. Especially in your slippery neck of the woods. The back tire spinning is going to want to go sideways all the time. Got a pic of the Hoist or lift?

I have to agree with all the above, I think it was WELL worth the time & effort. The bumper position to the marker light is dead-on! Compare yours to my stock 71.....

As mentioned above... you NAILED it!

Its a scissors lift that has two rails the tires sit on. I have to put the car on the hoist to get it in the garage. Perhaps this will give you a bit of an idea:

So that is another steep short climb. yeah I would put some kind of winch at the front of the garage instead of trying to finesse it up under power.

Yes, in the wet snow and wet tires on steel that would be the better way to do it if Hubby is willing to do it that way. I'm a little nervous to bring it up with him and imply there's doubt about being able to get the car in the garage safely in winter but I will ask him.

Have you considered building a set of wood ramps, you could easily build them to step up thus eliminating the sudden steepness. My lift is a real SOB to get anything on as it drops off substance just out of the barn. I have stacked up 2x12's drive on now. Yes they can be a bit heavy if need to move out of the way so put handles on the sides for 2 person carry. You could build right up to the lift height or use lift ramps to bridge the gap.
Just a thought as it takes more winch than you think to move a car up a slope. You have to consider the lift will be in the way and the possibility of damage to frt of car from cable angle. I damaged mine(granted is was already wrecked) putting on and off a trailer due to ramps being too short.

I'll give some thought to that.

I brought up the cable puller idea with my husband and he didn't reject it. He said we once winched my Eagle in the garage like that when we were restoring it but I don't remember that.

Maybe just a harbor freight come-along hooked to the front of the lift.

I'll leave it up to my husband how and if he wants to do that when the time comes. We got snow again last night but it all melted again. Probably time to put the snow tires on the Corvette.
