Everything good Fatcat even the cam bearings aren't bad ...plus they're very forgiving if they're nicked up
I'm concerned about that nick on #6 cylinder right on the fire ring. Can you get a clearer pic of that?
stay tuned eh? you and the wire wheel....haha, orange or black?
Niether! I realize you have probably spent your life doing this stuff and sorry if my work is boring but I am having fun and maybe some on here enjoy watching a guy who has never done anything like this make progress. I know it's just an oil pan.
The picture really doesn't do it justice but here you go....I know some will not like it because it isn't orange or black but I wanted to test the Duplicolor Metalcast paint since that is what I am going to use on the block.

oh stop! haha, if you wanna strip off the paint on your oil pan and paint it that Japanese blue, more power to ya!
That's a pretty good nick. Make sure the head gasket goes past that nick .it should because it was sealed up before unless you did it? You might want to see what the machine shop would charge for cutting the deck and see if you can swing it
If it leaks you'll have to pull the motor again and do all that work over again.
See if you can get a better pic from the side. Like you did in the second pic that came out blurry.
Maybe take a white piece of paper and stand it with the edge going across the nick.
I agree with decking as well - that'll be a hot spot, and it's next stop is the water jacket... do have them take the most minimum amount of material off.

I talked to the machinest today and he said he had not noticed that nick before but didn't really look for one either. He said that if it was inside the gasket, it wouldn't be a problem. The nick was there when I tore the engine down. I will try to get another picture of it and post real quick.
sure, they'd work but they're about 50 buck above retail.... add to those heads - valves @ $210 for 16, springs and retainers @ 200 for a set, valve job @150.... and suddenly those 400 heads are 1000 heads..... of course, retail on those is ~ 904
oh yeah, valve studs and guides need to be bought as well.... but I think I've belabored my point enough
missed your other question, your exhaust valves maybe, your springs and retainers yes - but don't reuse the springs.....
and they're still an old australian designed/cast head that really isn't an upgrade over Vortecs.

Yeah I spoke to the guy and he said he really didn't think they were what I want..I am really thinking about just going with my 624 heads. The machinest said 250-300 to do a valve job on them and I can always upgrade later I think.
I am really just reading and trying every way I can to understand what it is I really want and need. Maybe 400 HP is more than I need, I doubt I have ever drove a car with 300 HP.

presuming they're not cracked...
however, with newer heads you get better economy and more performance - and with gas hovering around 3.50 a gallon, getting 12 instead of 20 can really add up.
Here is the inside view of the cylinder ridge where the nick is.
That looks really good I can't even see the nick and the ridge is almost undetectable.
With out buying heads and putting $300+ into you old heads will cost you 75-100 HP for only another $300 . There is nothing except NOS that will give you that much HP for $300
