Yeah I have thought about building a cradle on rollers for the doors, one that fits under it snug so when you undo the hinges it supports the, should make it easier to put back on too... I know you can buy them like that but I think building them would be much cheaper!

Did a little tonight but I have to figure out how to take the doors off now! Hahaha

Must finish the car, must finish the car, must finish the car....
No disrespect intended, but you seem to go from one project to another without completing the previous. Case in point, as far as I can determine your newly rebuilt engine still has issues as in it won't idle correctly. Then you started the paint - whew that is a huge project. If you take the doors off to paint the car you are (in my opinion) opening up another can of worms. Stop opening new doors, complete what you have started and DRIVE it. We all want to see you driving and enjoying your Corvette.

Pete makes a good point, you need to drive it an get the motor dialed in. You can still block it while you are tweaking and tunning, then you won't have to take the chance of screwing up the paint trying to get the motor right. For me paint is going to be my last big project...

Hey man no offense taken bro! The project on the engine was completed and just needed to be driven another 400 miles to break it in. I was able to pretty well dial it in and seemed to be good, even the temp problem. If you read back the reason for starting the paint, was a guy that paints cars for a living said he wanted to paint the car for me as a project for him, things were going well when he and my mom had a falling out and he eventually quit on me leaving me to finish it alone. I had no plan to paint the car until next winter as a project but now I have to finish the project to be able to drive it!

I am way too deep in to not finish it now, as soon as I finish the paint I have a shop that is going to put the final tune on it. Nobody wants to drive it more than I do!!!! :-)

Now, since it has been sitting somehow it has developed a mechanical problem I am sure is not a big deal but with the body stripped to the primer, I don't want to do anything mechanical and risk getting any oils on the body.

The new problem is the only idling problem the car has ever had and it started a couple of weeks ago when I went to pull it out of the garage to clean a little.

get a small tarp and a roll of the handy man secret weapon, duct tape (prefer Gorilla brand, super sticky). wrap the tarp over the fenders and tape it down. Then you should be able to work on the engine without worry, i would think anyway.

Look down your carb and make sure there's no dripping of fuel, then check a few plugs to see if its running rich. If all checks out and you've had a good air filter and fuel filter check to see if your distributor moved? Sometimes you don't get the hold down tight enough and when you shut the car down the dist. Can turn a few degrees.

do use the gorilla tape on the INSIDE of the engine compartment and not where you plan to paint on the fenders.

FatCat, a little off subject but you seem to be one laid back young man. You'll get everything possible and then some out of life. I really admire your attitude. Good luck and like everyone, can't wait to see finished product.

Wow Bill, thanks so much! I really appreciate your comment. My wife and I have been married for 23 years and this project has been a dream come true for me. I have told her since we were kids when we get our kids raised I was going to get us a car that only the 2 of us can get in! Today I over came a huge fear with this bumper. I am pumped!!!

For my first run, I think it turned out ok, this bumper is just going on my garage wall as an ornament anyway. I learned a ton today but I have to get the whole orange peel issue under control. Next! Wet sanding what I did today. Oooooo more sanding! I will make a finale push this week to try and finish the body prep!

Fatcat, I'd say that's a pretty respectable first attempt. I see what looks like a moderate amount of orange peel and NO runs. If you can pull that off with the rest of the car that will be an amazing feat considering you'd never used a paint gun before today!

Next, have you got everything you need for color sanding and buffing?

Thanks brother! I was able to pull it off with no rims or sags so now I have to figure out how to get the orange peel thing out. In. My mind, if its there you can't sand it out glass smooth but I have never wet sanded before either so I may be surprised. As for the sanding and buffing materials I do not and that is next in my list. The guy at the paint store said a buffer is gonna cost $100+ so I wasn't thinking it would be that high and will have to get one.
Orange peel observation: the curves and rounded areas seem to be less likely to have a problem than the larger flat surface areas. Any input on why that is or is it just me?
