I believe the factory paint would have been lacquer finish so unless it spent most of its life indoors in storage its fairly safe to say it was shot.... I'm Willing to bet the paint he stripped wasn't the original finish anyway since so many c3's were painted colors like resale red...
My car was painted 3 times before I bought it.
That's impressive work. This really encourages me. I've wanted to try painting my own car. So far I've only ever sprayed parts and the exterior of a house.
Thanks! If I can do it anyone can do it! The good thing is, now I have all the tools so a paint job won't be nearly as expensive! Get it on!

My car was originally brown reprinted silver. Whoever did it painted the silver right on top of the brown without scuffing or even a primer. The good thing was because of the shotty work, the paint came off fairly easy. I think! Hahaha
I started stripping mine and luckily someone stripped the original and most of the red paint off prior to painting green... Its coming off easy with a razor blade.... then back to original corvette gray!

Razor blade was the only way to go on mine for sure. U got a thread?
FC, this is probably one of the most incredible threads I have read in all of the years on the forum. You have given hope to any C3 owner who has never picked up a tool. I'm 61 years old (which still makes you a young man) and it even makes me want to try projects I would have never tried. Great job is all I can say.

hey FC, you know I've been following this thread since you started your engine rebuild. it's been very informative but more than that, it's helped me maintain the desire to finish my car up. I'm a bit behind you in progress but I've done a bit more too. anyway, whenever I get tired of working on the car I just pull up this thread and go through it for a new attitude.
GREAT JOB, you'll feel like a million dollars when where ever you stop you get compliments.

Congrats on the build, I really does look great. And it is inspiring. I've read silver / metallic gray is one of the hardest colors to spray evenly without blotches and yours looks damn good.
No I Dont have a thread... I really should start one... the girlfriend and I kinda have an agreement I wouldnt really get serious with working on it till the kitchen remodeling is done (I'm practicing compromise for marriage I guess).... But the kitchen is almost done! and I keep finding myself sneaking out to the garage....I do have the new engine almost complete and ready to go into the car.
The delay has helped me to have the time to research things better and collect parts/ upgrades at better prices. Right now I'm researching the best sound /heat deadner for under the carpet and padding.

Hahaha! I just thought this would be a good picture for everyone to see I take safety seriously! LOL!
I am really glad to hear this thread has some sort of inspiration to some of you. This is me and my wife's new date car since our kids are now grown.... We may get to take it to the historic Admiral Twin Drive In next week. For those who have no idea what that is, if you ever saw the movie "The Outsiders" you saw the Admiral Twin here on Tulsa.
FC, that paint job looks great! I can't see any tiger stripe in it at all, now get that color sanded and buffed and it will really stand out (was going to say pop but that just sounds so gay )
fc do you know what your overall cost is for the paint job? And man hours? Be interesting to know versus what a paint shop would charge...
Define what all costs you mean and hours. If you are talking about from the first scrape of paint to clear coat, I would say 80 hours. Paint and all supplies would be about $800, tools about $300.

Thanks! I am going to sand the car, tape off the flames, shoot them with diamond white pearl and then shoot 2 coats of clear over the whole car. At that point I will sand again and buff it out.
