Rock auto has delco IAC cheapest I could find in a pair. Mine was slow coming to Idle at a stop. Its drops right down now. I would also check your Throttle position sensor voltage. Should be 5.25 volts. If I remember correctly. (its in the thread
here somewhere) At the very least pull the IAC on both TB's and clean them to see what happens. After you clean or replace you will need to let the ecm relearn. Drive over 40 mph for a min. of 10 minutes. Best of luck.
When I had the TBs re bushed I replaced the IACs, maybe 2 to 3 years old but very little mileage on them. I will pull and clean for sure. I had done the tps last summer but can certainly check that, I even have Buccaneers adapter gadget for that. Thanks, this is a start at least. Also glad to hear from someone else about long warm up times.

This "sticky" is for 1982 Corvette CFI owners which also has the 700r4 Trans and differences in the Rear.
Although there are numerous publications and general information out there about C3 auto repairs, we are only concerned with the differences that are specific for the 1982 Corvette Model Year.
This "sticky" will provide a good start for a "standard type" checklist to complete for a specific problem or problems, therefore help eliminating unnecessary replacement of parts and unwanted downtime of using the 82.
Everyone's contribution is welcomed and needed.

Thanks so much SSRoadster for all this info;very valuable for me as a first time C3 owner. The one thing I do not see is the fuel sensor replacement. Might you help. Saw on a page last week that the tank does not need to be removed but can not find that page anymore. Might be good to add to your above page as well.
Really appreciate it. kkkkkk

It is important that if you use this sticky to read it from the beginning, all of the suggestions listed, as there are sometimes where one suggestion can overlap and even be the same possible solution for more than one problem that may be in another section.

General Maintenance... it is important to make sure that your charging system, cooling system, fuel system and other fluids are maintained on a regular basis.
So doing a PM (Preventative Maintenance) on your vehicle will help lessen problems that you might otherwise experience.

All 1982 owners should at least have the above Books.
Although Books B & C can be tough to understand at times, they are an excellent source for troubleshooting and solutions for your vehicle, along with the disassembly & assembly of your Corvette. Also with the wealth of info here on our forum, and other sources as well, you should be able to diagnose and repair your problem yourself or forward the info to your mechanic (tech) so that they can repair and complete the job as needed.
Beware, you can spend hours of reading and learning just from the WEB SITES SECTION listed below.

...W...WOT & Cruise Control Cable Issue submitted by MARC (Drawmain)
"Here's one for anyone with an 82 having issues with charging and CEL's. As I was driving today (pretty day here, took the tops out and cruised) my throttle all of a sudden wouldn't go past barely open. It was enough to maintain speed, but acceleration was really slow. It was like the cable was catching on something. So I drive home, pop the hood and remove the air cleaner to see what is up. The cruise control cable sheath was melted to the cable, it was totally gone between the throttle bodies. Neither of the other cables showed any issues at all. I removed the cable and I had full throttle travel again. Here is what I think happened:
The cruise control cable is routed to the front of the engine, over the top of the alternator. There is sheathing around the cable the entire length to the bracket on the intake. My sheathing was dry and brittle and had split exposing the cable inside. As the cable lays on top of the alternator, I think it contacted the case of the alternator with the bare cable, causing the cable to conduct current to the intake. Scary stuff. I was lucky all that happened to me was a melted cable sheath, it could have been far far worse. I removed the entire cruise control assembly (I did keep the transducer in place but I have unplugged it) and capped the vacuum supply to the diaphragm. I no longer have an intermittent CEL, my charging system isn't dropping voltage anymore and my go pedal isn't being stopped from operating.

Moral of the story: If you have an 82 with cruise control, check your cruise control cable to the throttle bodies for damage and contact with your alternator".

-------------------------------------------------------SECTION THREE--------------------------------------------------------

NO START CONDITION(S)
these are just the basics you should start with:
...1...check ECM for codes
...2...check battery, check all ground and electrical connections & charging system
...3...check tank for fuel
...4...listen for fuel pump to run for 2 seconds with key in the on position.... 4 & 5 should be done at the same time, as you want to make sure that the injectors do prime after the fuel pump turns on
...5...remove air cleaner and look for injectors to prime after fuel pump turns on
...6...if injectors don't prime, check fuse panel for the two 3 amp injector fuses to see if blown or fuse panel corrosion
...7...remove gas door to access fuel pump and make sure the small rubber hose from the pump to the fuel line is secured and not deteriorated, (you will have to remove pump to check) as if it is not the proper type of "fuel rated hose", just sitting in the gas will destroy it by making it soft and crack open, thus making fuel delivery and pressure practically non-exsistent. Replace with "fuel rated hose" if necessary. Also check hose(s) and wire connections at the top of the pump assembly, replace (again with "fuel rated hose") & repair as neccessary
...8...check and or change fuel filter ...ACDelco part# GF482
...9...check FP (Fuel Pressure) for proper psi, should be at least 13 psi for our engines, best place to check is between the TB's. but you can also check at the fuel filter. Also it is possible that your Fuel Pump may be old and not working correctly, which cannot only cause fuel starvation problems, which in turn leads to other idling and driveability problems as well. It has been recommended that if you have to change out the Fuel Pump, to replace it with a 1985 Corvette TPI model, as it flows more pressure. Even a new 82 replacement would be better than your worn out pump.
...10...check oil pressure switch, needs 4 psi to provide power to the pump during start-up
...11...check CTS (Coolant Temperature Sensor) for proper operation, it is located at the right front of the block (passenger side) just underneath the A.I.R (Air Pump Assembly) as this may contribute to a no-start or hard-starting condition.
...12...check 20 amp ECM fuse near battery, take fuse out, make sure there is no corrosion in the connection, also check ECM connections for any type of corrosion, etc..R&R if necessary
...13...when checking ECM connections, make sure connection is tight, if not make sure pins are aligned correctly and reattach
...14...check distributor cap, rotor, coil and ignition module. Make sure all electrical connections to the distributor are in place and secure. Ignition module needs a coating of silicone grease or thermal compound between the bottom of the module and the plate it attaches to, as if it is dry, the module will eventually fry and leave you stranded
...15...check all ignition wires (spark plug wires) for breaks in the wire and secure connection to the spark plugs
...16...pull spark plugs to check for fouling conditions and if fouled, replace all spark plugs rather than just the fouling one(s)
...17...check neutral safety switch for proper operation, your vehicle should only start in the "PARK" (P), or "NEUTRAL" (N) position for the auto trans only '82

-------------------------------------------------------SECTION FOUR---------------------------------------------------------

IDLING CONDITIONS
Idling for our engine @ factory specs is 450 rpm's in "Drive", that may be to low for some of us to live with. Most of us have the idle set @ 650 in "Drive". Adjusting the Idle will be covered under that heading.
in addition to above basics of "NO START CONDITION", which you should read first, you should also check the following:
...1...check all vacuum hoses for rotting, which will cause vacuum leaks, replace as necessary
...2...check all manifold & TB bolts for tightness and secure if necessary
...3...check timing and adjust as necessary
...4...check and or replace top gasket between top & bottom manifold if deteriorating, as this is a main source of vacuum leaks...Fel Pro offers a good gasket kit MS 91440 for replacement, which includes said gasket
...5...remove air cleaner and look for an umbrella type spray coming out of the injectors, not dripping. Make sure both throttle plates open and close at exactly the same time and angle
...6...if injectors are not spraying properly, then they need to be either cleaned, rebuilt and or replaced. Or there may be a Fuel Pressure and or clogged Fuel Filter problem.
...7...check TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) for proper setting, which is: .525 volts +/- .075 volts
...8...check IAC's (Idle Air Controls) for proper function,(there is one on each TB (Throttle Body)) ...when cleaning or replacing the IAC's and reinstallation, you may notice idle is higher then what it should be, they need to be reset and you accomplish that by taking a drive for about 10 miles above 30 mph, as this will reset them, and should bring the idle to normal
...9...check all of your exhaust manifold bolts, as I have had a number of them that were loose and backed out from the manifold, this type of leak(s) can also produce a "ticking", or "pinging" type sound @ idle and throughout the lower or part throttle RPM range.
...10...The 700R4 has a torque converter lock-up solenoid. When these go bad the symptoms are the same as a flaw in the ignition or fuel delivery. The idle can be rough and the car could be almost impossible to drive. The ECM does not show a code until it fails completely.
...11..if you experienced a very fast cold start idle (1500 rpm's and above, some owners have had cold start idles' as high as 2500 rpm's and higher), be sure to check all of the above, especially for vacuum leaks and possibly the timing to help correct the problem. Will have to check the Shop Manual for proper specs. Mine starts at about 900 to 1000 rpm's during a cold start-up, and goes up to 1300-1500 rpm's (depending on outside temps) and within 3 to 4 minutes gradually comes down to normal, while warming up, not driving. In extreme cold weather, the warm-up may take longer.

also listed in the WEB SITES SECTION under J
...4...FUEL PUMP when it comes time to replace yours, consider using the 85-87 Corvette TPI FUEL PUMP, as it increases fuel pressure in a more acceptable higher psi range (around 15 psi) which really enhances the performance of the CFI.
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-t...-w-1985-a.html [/B] also listed in the WEB SITES SECTION under M
...following info regarding the difference between the stock 82 CFI FUEL PUMP and the 85 TPI FUEL PUMP
"Even an 82 replacement pump comes with the new connector. Its the same connector that's on the 85 pump. So there is a bit of wiring involved on both.
Difference?
...82 pump pushes volume of 9-13 psi. The engine likes around 12. The pressure is set by the regulator spring in the driver side TBI. Under load (or as the pump weakens) the volume starts to drop, fuel supply is not enough to keep up with the RPM's. Once it drops below 9 psi the motor starts to hesitate and loss power at higher RPM.
...The 85 pump pushes volume at 40 psi. Well above the 12 psi the spring is set at. The spring will step down the volume to 12 easily. And because the 85 pump is so far above the 12 your TBI's will always get 12. A weakening 85 pump has a long way to go before it can not deliver enough. The other advantage is you can pop the cap on the regulator spring and dial it up a bit. Some have gone as high as 14-15 psi."
...5...HyperTech "PROM" info, part #'s and other accessories for the 82 L83 CFI. Increased performance & driveability over the stock "PROM", along with the Trans Converter lockup activivating over 43 mph.

The part #'s that are shown are not the full representation of what is available through many of the auto parts outlets. Rather, it is just to give you an idea of what you may be able to purchase quickly and locally in your area. Of course the various retail outlet web sites (which includes our vendors) will be of tremendous help in locating a specific part when needed.
