I have argued this point ad nauseum before and there are tons of folks on this forum that insist that no breakin is ever required for these motors. I absolutely do not buy that no breakin is needed. As to whether a proper breaking in your engine will solve your oil consumption issue is totally another thing.

Same experience with my 2007 Z06/LS7. Bought new with close to $90K on the line, why in hell should I think I know better than the mfgr. or some random guy? Virtually no oil consumption with the LS7, or for that matter with my crate LS3 following the same recommendations.

Pretty much if any supplier has a data sheet with specifics, be it paint or anything else, I at least RTFM.

My 2013 427 Convertible uses no oil also. Maybe the forged pistons in the 79 makes a difference.

You know i have been dreaming of doing this for some time now, I go to Mecum every April here in Houston and man they just give away mint condition 80-82 C3's with 10 to 20k on em. I thought hell for that little money you could buy one, have money left for say a LSX454 complete and drop her in there. Of coarse you would need tranny rebuilds etc but still, how cool would that be. Then i read Bee Jay's thread, and OMG, there is no way i could do all that, he knows his shyt to say the least, thats mind boggling to me all the stuff he went through, and figured out no less. BJ you must be part genius man, I dont think even a good mechanic that does it for a living could do that, much less an old football player with umpteen concussions. My hats off to you, absolute stellar job.....Roost

I dropped the oil pan, #6 rod bearing spun. Crank is scratched and will have to be machined.

My sympathies. You have a truck load of work into that car already and reading the bad news was a crush.

Hope repairs go better for you.

Oh No! That sucks.
I'm sorry to hear about it.
I was just thinking about you and your swap a couple days ago, and wondering how it was running and how the trans was holding up behind all that LS7 power.

Hopefully the damage is limited to just that one rod and you'll be able to get back up and running soon, but it would be good to check all the clearances.

On a separate note, I saw the post on the last page about tensioner and belt noise. I had a similar issue with mine and eventually tracked it down to power steering pulley alignment. After replacing the belt, the tensioner, and the P/S pump, I found that the pulley just wasn't on far enough. So keep that in mind when you get it going again.

Good luck with the repairs.

Ah man, that sucks. Fwiw, I'm in a similar boat after one of the Crane roller lifters in my 388 lost a tie bar a couple of weeks ago. I've pulled the engine and the metal from lifter and cam have pretty much destroyed everything.

I’m first to put a 427 LS7 into a GMC 1500HD eight lug. With the 6.0 liter up front, my truck is now a 13 liter!
JK!
i dropped the engine off at my friend who has done dozens of LS engines. I’m autocrossing the Porsche today, I should know something today or tomorrow.

If you ran that heat dissipater upside down would it let fresh cold air into the intake area , Basically reversed top and bottom

The engine is toast. Everything is bad. Crank, pistons, rods, cam, and the block. Block repair is cost prohibitive because metal particles got into the lifter bores, and several bores need relining. So my LS7 experiment for the summer of 2019 is over, but it was fun while it lasted. What a blast.
I was over my head, and I’m sure I made mistakes, which you can’t do with $10,000 LS7 engines.
The car has already been converted for LS, and returning to the sbc383 would involve cooling, exhaust, accessory, and a few other unmods, so I’m going to stick with LS.
I can’t afford another LS7, so I’m in the market for a good LS3.
I’m really bummed about this, but I tried. I failed, but I tried. Maybe some of my work will prove useful to the next guy. Thanks for all of your help, advice, and especially those that contribute parts. This forum rocks. Maybe I can get close to the 500 hp rush again with a stout LS3. It is addicting.
I’d appreciate any help in finding one.

My sympathies on the bad motor. You really gave it your all and everyone here knows that. Thanks for sharing this build and I'm sure you will be successful with your next LS effort.
Any dry sump system is complicated and to much to tackle for myself. Something for the supercar crowd to worry about.

Hey man, I'm sorry to hear about the engine diagnosis. I've been enjoying seeing another high hp/lightweight C3 project here on the forum.

I'm hoping your friend is able to offer some insight on the cause issue, and help the future LS3 plans to go smoothly.

Keep us updated.
