I don't believe the SAH problem is a continuing issue for one very good reason. GM changed EBCM suppliers from Delphi to Bosch starting in the 2009 model year. They also changed the steering sensor at the same time. The suppliers were different and the designs are different as well. Problems that are common to one will not be common to the other. Failures in other sub systems such as the engine controls will be common to either module and will result in Service Messages under the same circumstances.

Original complaints (05s) related to an inadvertant activation of active handling that was immediately followed by the EBCM detecting a failure thus shutting the system down and lighting the service message. No matter what year car you have when that message is being displayed active handling will not do anything-- it has been shut down. So if you have a pre 09 car don't worry when you see the message since the danger point has already been passed. Either it activated and applied a brake or another issue caused it to fail.

09 and newer models can have inadvertant activations as can any other brand car but it is far less likely than the earlier cars that had to have the comb installed in the steering sensor connector.

The dealer that fixed the SAH light by fixing ignition system issues did the correct thing. Active Handling and Traction Control rely on the engine computer module to control torque whenever the electronic brake control module requests a torque reduction. The ECM can't do that if there are ignition issues and it will send a message to the EBCM saying it can't do its job. The EBCM sets a code that basically says the failure isn't here and lights the Service messages.

Finally, there is a lot of misinformation in this thread and you can't depend on it to help you resolve an issue as there are many failures that are unrelated to the original steering sensor failure experienced in the early C6 cars. If there have been a number of NHTSA complaints sent in I can understand why nothing happens since the complaints are probably as much jibberish as the information in this thread is.

Hi Shafta,

I am glad you're okay! I want to get a case set up for you in my system. Will you please private message me? Include your VIN (again), mileage, name, address, phone number and the dealers you work with. Did you get home safely or did you have it towed somewhere? Are you planning on going to the dealership? Keep me posted,

Kelly J.

It has happened to my 2010 GS convertible. It is at the dealers now being fixed. Didn't realise that the issue was so widespread

My car is a 2010 Grand Sport Convertible. Not a pre-2009 car as you are suggesting. The Service Active Handling light came on during a trip of about 600 miles. It came on when I restarted the car at the end of the first half of the trip. Other than the light I didn't see any adverse effects on the handling except when I acclerated quickly from a stop and induced some wheelspin and fishtailing. The car started to yaw left and right very violently. I imeediately stopped shut it down and then restarted. The warning remained but again I could detect no adverse effects on handling even at high speeds approaching 100mph! the car has exactly 10060 miles on it. Actually speeds and mileage are in kilometres as it is a Canadian Car bought new and serviced by the dealer.

FWIW, my SAH issues on my 2010 C6 were traced back to code P0300 which has something to do with random misfires. A plug wire was replaced under warranty in 2011 and when the SAH issue happened again, in July 2013, the dealer replaced all of the wires according to a document #3282794, to remedy a "loose wire condition." The repair was not covered by the warranty. So, Bill Dearborn's post is essentially correct - current SAH issues are probably not due to the steering sensor.

Ok folks wish me luck here I'm going to get involved in this "service active handling" warning issue. Some history, I bought my 2005 base coupe in march from a local dealer along with a warranty, thank goodness I hope. I've wanted a Corvette since I was 11 years old and I finally had the means to get one so I was really geaked when I found this car at the dealership where my salesman that I've bought 2 other vehicles from in the last 3 years. The car only has 36,xxx miles on it so I figured it would be a great car. I made a mistake that I never should have, I have access to getting the warranty repair records for any GM car but my contact was out of town for the month before I bought the vehicle until 2 months after I bought the vehicle so I didn't get that until May and wow was I pi$$ed when I got it. This car has been in for warranty work no fewer than 21 times, if I had known this when I bought the car I never would have bought it and I'll be discussing this with my salesman tomorrow. Alright enough crying over spilled milk. The problems started the first time I took the car for an extenede trip on the expressway, I went 52 miles to my destination and then back, when I exited the freeway coming back the check engine light was on and the car was very sluggish when taking off, I got it home and pulled the codes and got, P0601 = Control Module Read Only Memory(ROM) Check Sum Error and P700 Transmission control module. This has happened 3 times since clearing the codes the first time. Now for the last 2 weeks I've only driven the car around the neighborhood because I'm now getting the service active handling system warning also. I am going into the dealership tomorrow to talk with my salesman and set up an appointment to get the car in for service, this is to say the very least EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING to someone who has wanted one of these vehicles his entire life, to have this happen and only have put less than 250 miles on the car since he got it! Like I said wish me luck.

I'm just reading this thread and wondering if the 2013 427 convertible anniversary Vet is included in this active handling issue?
Thanks

Here's an update to my previous post (#628), I ended up taking my car to the dealership that my salesman worked at previously which is only 2 miles from my home and I know all the people in the service department from oil changes on vehicles I've previously bought from them. This is not the dealership I bought the car from, but I'm glad I took the car there. They have sorted thru the service active handling warning issue and have that item taken care of, now the car is going to the transmission tech to have the transmission control module issues sorted out. I'll post a detailed synopsis of the whole repair when it is finished.

Ok folks I have the car back and so far everything is working as designed which is great, before I get into the details here I want to thank Chevy Cust Svc as they followed the progress of this repair the whole way thru. Now all of us know including myself how difficult it is to find a dealership that you have faith in their service department. I've had pretty good luck with the dealership that I took the Corvette into to have the problems sorted out. First the service active handling warning issue. I have a printed copy of my car's complete warranty service history. This car has been in 21 times 20 of which are to the dealership from where the original owner purchased the car, my car now has 36,857 miles on it. The problem with the service active handling warning was traced to the steering wheel rotation sensor, which has been replace 5 times already by the dealership from where the car was purchased, I know hard for me, the service rep where I took the car to be repaired and Chevy Cust Svc to believe but true. The service rep called me and informed me that the suspension tech who was working on the car had figured out the whole mess and mess is the key word here. I have the sensor, wiring, and wiring connector that was in the car when I took it to them, which I really appreciate the dealership giving me that. The only part that was the correct one was the sensor itself, the wiring connector was completely the wrong connector, whoever at the original dealership worked on it last used a connector that they had to grind or file off the raised edges just to get it to fit into the sensor connection then the 4 wires on the connector were wired in correctly also there is a comb clip that holds the 4 wires secure in the connector and that piece was completely missing. The connector that they had used had a 12 pin configuration 6 top and 6 bottom well the 4 wires are on the outside 2 posts L&R of the lower 6 pins. The sensor pins match up to outside 2 posts L&R of the upper 6 pins so this poor sensor had no possible way of ever functioning correctly. On top of all that all 4 wires are the same color (white) and the tech had no idea if those were wired into the proper locations on the car. So instead of just trying to guess where they went because he could find nowhere in the service manuals or info that he could get did he find a diagram or picture of where exactly the wires were supposed to be connected. The dealership did something here that will bring me back to buy cars and have them serviced there now for sure. They have a customer that has a 2005 base coupe that he bought from them so they contacted him to see if he would be willing to bring his car in so the tech could use his car to look at how that sensor is supposed to be wired, the guy said sure no problem (his next oil change is on me). All of this involved the tech spending 4.5 hours above what is called for to replace that sensor. I personally thanked him for being so diligent in fixing that damned thing. The car then went to the transmission tech who diagnosed the transmission control module problem as just that, an internal fault with the TCM, it was replaced and seems to be working just fine, the car is a blast to drive again. Now as for the cost of all this, I am not one who generally buys extended warranties on anything but something told me when I bought this car that this might be one time to buy the warranty, I'm now really glad that I did. The warranty is basically an extension of the factory bumper to bumper warranty that covers me until Nov. of 2016 or 76,000 miles with a $100 deductible per warranty repair, the cost of the warranty was $2800 which seemed pretty high to me but I did it. This repair total came to $998 and some change which did not include the 4.5 extra hours of labor the suspension tech put in fixing somebody else screw up. The service rep said they were working with the warranty company to recover some of that amount also. The service rep also said that the warranty company (Vehicle One) was very good to work with and handled the case very well. Total cost out of my pocket $100. Only time and miles will tell if this is the permanent fix to the problem, if it isn't I'll be back to update on here. OK the rain has stopped the roads are dry I'm going out driving!

Default Any progress?

Hi everyone,
I'm just wondering if there has been any progress on this issue. I just totalled my 05 on Wednesday (9-18-13). It felt like it locked up a back brake shooting me off the highway, down a 50' ravine into a ditch. I was very fortunate to walk away with only a headache. I will be calling NHTSA along with Chevy Customer Service.
Thanks!

I have been dealing with this same problem for close to two years. I have had one of Chevy's recorders plugged in for the past year. Every time you start the car you have to turn the recorder on if I do it never gives me the dreaded service light but if I forget to turn it on I get the light within just a few blocks most of the time. I am convinced that the recorder pulls just enough current to prevent the problem. The dealer keeps telling me that they cannot fix it until the recorder catches something. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Kelly,
1st of all I want to thank you for your contribution on this thread and this issue. Can you confirm what model year/s this issue was classified as a RECALL? It is for 2005 and 2006 right?

Hi Hollywood,

You're welcome! All recalls are VIN specific. I am more than happy to check each individual VIN to see if there are any recalls that apply. I do not feel comfortable being broad when it is related to recalls as some people would be upset. I would prefer to do this on a case by case basis. Please post your VIN or PM me with it.

Have had the A/H, Trac lite message and warning emblem on the dash come on several
times but only when starting the car with the brake pedal fully depressed. Starting the car with a lightly pressed brake pedal has never tripped the message& light icon. Car will drive and operate fine but brake lights won't work. Restarting the car does not always cure the problem. Had to pull a battery cable for a minute or so, put it back on and restart the car. Fault goes away but have to reprogram all the memory stuff. Pain in the ***! Come on G/M, get your crap together and find a "fix"!
