U.S. District Court Upholds Cook County’s Assault Weapon Ban

https://www.cookcountyil.gov/news/us...ult-weapon-ban

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle hailed a U.S. District Court ruling upholding the County’s ordinance banning specific types of assault weapons.

U.S. District Judge Manish S. Shah last week granted the County’s motion to dismiss a challenge to its assault weapons ban filed by plaintiffs Matthew D. Wilson and Troy Edhlund.

The County’s ordinance, an amendment to the Cook County Deadly Weapons Dealer Control ordinance, defines “assault weapons,” and makes it a crime for any person to “manufacture, sell, offer or display for sale, give, lend, transfer ownership of, acquire or possess any assault weapon or large capacity magazine.”

Any person found in violation of the ordinance is subject to a fine of between $1,000 and $5,000. A subsequent violation of the ordinance could bring a fine of up to $10,000. Individuals found in violation may still be sentenced for a jail term of up to six months.

Gun control, stronger communities and ending the violence epidemic - J.B. Pritzker

https://chicago.suntimes.com/crime/g...ootings-op-ed/

"Without a doubt, we need common-sense and long-overdue gun safety legislation. Criminals and those who want to do harm shouldn’t have access to guns, and no one should have access to weapons of war or be able to obtain guns illegally. We need to ban assault weapons, bump stocks, and high-capacity magazines, and we need to stop the importation of illegal guns across Illinois’ borders. It’s also time to enforce universal background checks and enact a gun dealer licensing bill.

That legislation is supported by lawmakers of both parties in the General Assembly, and it is time for a new governor in Springfield ready to sign it into law."

People caught texting while driving will face stiffer penalties under a new Illinois law. Starting July 1, 2019, drivers caught texting will be issued a moving violation that will go on their driving record.

More than 10,000 FOIDs yet to be renewed from June

https://www.ilnews.org/news/statewid...551a3eef4.html

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a law Friday giving a 60-day grace period for gun owners to renew their state firearms identification cards and still own a firearm, but it won’t help the thousands of gun owners that have let theirs expire.

The law allows for a Firearm Owner’s Identification, or FOID, card to remain valid for 60 days after the owner has sent in for renewal. This means a gun owner can submit their renewal for the card and still be a legal gun owner if it expires before the Illinois State Police processes it.

But it doesn’t apply to 10,720 FOID card owners whose cards expired in June and haven’t been renewed as of Aug. 13. That information was obtained by Illinois News Network from the state police via a Freedom of Information Act request.

These thousands of gun owners are now, technically, outlaws. The penalty is a slap on the wrist, until the new year, that is.

Illinois law says an otherwise law-abiding gun owner is subject to a petty offense for possessing a gun with an expired card. The punishment is upped to a Class A Misdemeanor, $1,000 and up to a year in prison, if their card is more than six months expired and they’re caught in possession of a firearm.

Cook County’s chief watchdog has concluded that more than $330,000 in property tax breaks and refunds that Democratic gubernatorial candidate J.B. Pritzker received on one of his Gold Coast mansions — in part by removing toilets — constituted a “scheme to defraud.”

Cook County Inspector General Patrick Blanchard also recommends in the confidential report that Cook County should try to recover the money from the billionaire.

400 guns stolen from Tennessee UPS facility found in Chicago suburb, feds say

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/...ns/1498314002/

ATF had said two men in a U-Haul truck took the guns Sunday. Agency spokesman Michael Knight said the truck was recovered along with the guns.

An 18-year-old man has been charged in the theft. Authorities are searching for the second suspect in addition to anyone else who may have been involved, Knight said.

A new resolution in Hancock County, Illinois on gun rights is getting mixed reviews.

County Board members said they support the second amendment rights, but gun owners say it could do more harm than good.

Seeking stricter gun regulation, women sue over 'incalculable' damage inflicted on children

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/l...003-story.html

The lawsuit calls for tighter regulation of gun sales, including the video-recording of transactions and background checks on all gun store and gun show employees. It contends the state of Illinois “has failed to implement meaningful gun trafficking regulations, despite authority to do so.”

Because the resulting violence has caused “cognitive and emotional disabilities” in children, the suit argues, the state is violating the Americans with Disabilities Act. It further claims the state is violating the Illinois Civil Rights Act because of the “disparate impact” of violence on minority communities.

The suit wants the state to crack down on illegal firearms sales “especially in racially and economically isolated neighborhoods in the city that are awash in gun violence.”

In addition to stepped-up background checks and video-recording of sales, the lawsuit seeks to make it more difficult for people to buy guns if any firearms they previously purchased were used in a crime. And it seeks to have firearm owner’s identification cards physically seized when they have been suspended or revoked.

MEQUON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Ozaukee County’s first indoor boutique shooting range is now open for business. Bear Arms opened their doors on Wednesday, October 10.

The boutique is half shooting range, half social hall and half shop full of shooting accessories, clothing and skin care products.

In addition to a traditional shooting range, Bear Arms has a virtual simulator similar to ones used by the military and law enforcement for training. The shooting range has eight lanes including two for long guns. Gun rentals are also available.

“My goal is to create the premiere shooting and personal self-defense facility in Wisconsin," said owner Cheryle Rebholz.

The shop will host classes for gun safety, concealed carry license training, hunter safety, personal protection and conflict avoidance.

Bear Arms is located at 9653 N. Granville Road in Mequon. A special grand opening event will be held in November.

Illinois State Rifle Association endorses Gov. Bruce Rauner

https://prairiestatewire.com/stories...v-bruce-rauner

“Gov. Bruce Rauner has been a backstop in Springfield to some of the most outrageous proposals aimed at taking away our Second Amendment Rights and Freedoms. People who care about the Second Amendment must support Bruce Rauner for governor,”

J.B. Pritzker would “be a disaster for gun owners.”

“When he ran for Congress in 1997, he proposed a 100 percent tax on handguns and handgun ammunition and also proposed to ban the sale of handguns entirely. Pritzker proposes to ban semi-automatic rifles, supports draconian dealer licensing schemes and magazine bans,” Pearson wrote in the prepared statement.
